PROGRESS. PRfflC VOL1 II. PRINCETON, KANSAS, THURSDAY, FEBUABY 18 1886. NO. 7 Foe Sale or Trade.

One Lieter, 1 Cultivator and 1 Harrow. Will Miss Esther Thurber, WlIXIAMSBCRG, KA8. DRESSMAKING In all its forms. Some of our men have quit taking the Eagle home to their wives, 6ince their names have been so prominent cf late. One poor wife went to a neighbor's to see a copy, but the lord at this place had not brought home his paper for the 6ame reason.

Come to the Eagle office, ladies, and you shall have copies without money or price. The February number of "Our Little Ones and the Nursery" has its usual attractions for little folks. The illustrations are all that American art can make them and the etories are a never-ending source of delight to the juvenile world. Price 81.50 per annum. Published by the Russell Publishing Company, Bos-tc Mass.

For Sale. Steel Engravings. have at the Eagle olllce some vcly fine steel engravings, 24x30, which we offer for sale at low figures. These engravings are sold in many places for $15 apiece. We have taken them in payment for advertising, and can sell them for 3 each.

Ladies are invited to call looking dog, supposed to be mad, ran through E. Y. Bossiere's hog lot, at Silkville, snapping at everything he came in contact with. A little over two weeks after, the first hog went mad and was killed, and up to date nine have gone mad, including the celebrated thoroughbred Poland-China boar "Prince," valued at $50. All have either died or been killed, for when once seized with it there does not seem to be anything that will do any good.

Also cne fine calf went mad and had to be killed. The calf would fight, rushing headlong at any one of thing coming near him; but the hogs manifested no such disposition, rather seemed to be possessed with a fear of something in front of them that them on their feet and moving as long as they could stand. They would touch neither food nor water, and died in about two days. Ottawa Journal. A splendid rivalry might be Inaugurated among our church people which would in our estimation, be more profitable than the public dis- ther, we hereby promise to assist you the building of such a line Ly taking stock in said railroad to a reasonable amount and voting you township bonds in payment of same; aud it is further Resolved That we request the officers of the N.

Messrs. Finley, Fogle, Welsh, Donaldson, Fields and Towle were appointed as such committee. Mi. Welsh was appointed a9 a committee to request the railroad company (S. to donate twenty acres of land lying east of town a3 a public park.

After discussing several questions minor interest by Messrs. Welsh and Towle, and an admonition from the chairman, cautioning all to walk the paths of virtue and rectitude the meeting adjourned. J. J. Mullally, SecV.

E. Alexander offers his person al property for sale on Saturday, the 25th, at his residence 2 1-2 miles southwest of Williamsburg. Ernest Whitney will move onto Jerry Hussey's place as soon as A. Marcoux builds a house tor him which he has contracted to do. Hugh McEvoy, of Anderson county, says that they will vote for the bonds again, but it must bring the road to Williamsburg this time.

Next Saturday, at the school house, the railroad meeting will be extended, and will try to erganize a VY illiamsburg town and farm club. Our merchants should prepare for liberal advertising this spring. Every advertisement you put for yourself is one for the whole town. It has been a long time since so many people were in town as were on our streets last Saturday. It was a fine day, end the farmers improved it, Bro.

Smith, of the WaverlyNews, is a man now. We hope the young ladies will receive him as such since he has taken the pains to. let them all know it. The roads are in splendid condition. Mud is not often known in Kansas.

The common highway is equal to the best turnpikes of Indi-aaa and Ohio1. Horsemen, get our terms- for printing tine bills. We will not knock under to any office this side of Kansas Ciiy on lino work or prices. Patronize home. The lunch 6tand will ba continued jext Saturday in the sme shape, always baking Burlington flour.

Next tirce she will run way into the night. Will fix up for ladies. The Eagle graciously tbak? Messrs. Welsh, Towle and Donaldson for the many complimentary words spoken in its favor last Saturday uight. Again, many thanks.

Franklin county has increased in population during the last five y6ars. Cap Allen says this increase is not large enough, aud he deplores the lack of patriotism in many families. Farmers' should prepareto. raise a big crop of sorghum this year. You can gt your sorghum molasses made at Ottawa on the shares.

It will pay you to put out a couple of acres. We believe that a cheap lunch counter, where a lunch could be had like the oue last Saturday for about 10c per meal, could be kept up by our business men at a decided benefit to the business of the place. Cap Allen went to Topeka on Tuesday to attend the meeting of the Grand Lodge of Free Masons. Also to attend the Grand Lodge of the A. O.

W.i which convenes as soon the masonic lodge adjourns. Mr. Welsh's free lunch last Sat urday was a success as tar as tue dinner and the eaters were concern, ed. Better bread and coffee is haid to find. But the auction of flour was not a success.

He should have advertised in the Eagle. State statistics show that the loss in cattle during the cold weather has been greatly overestimated. Instead of a loss of one hundred thousand, it has been over twenty-five thousand head, or about two per cent, in the frontier counties. The Franklin Coal Co. is in the market to buy for cash and exchange for flour, wheat, corn find coal.

No use of our farmers hauling to Ottawa, for we have at our door now an agency for one of the Snest mills in the state. The fiist car load of flour sold last week is highly spoken of. It is a question us whether it, is manlike, to say nothing at all of being Chiist-like for a professed christian to Dass a fellow mortal on the street without greeting. We know it is not Christ like, nor do wo ibink it manlv. Yet this town has an example or two which wo may have to some time.

Mrs. C. R. Wood, of Lebo, was visit'inf? her manv friends in town this week. We noticed very plain ly a look in her countenance i to once more in joy the society and happy surroundings of Williants-burg as her permanent home.

VV predict that Charlie will never ue satisfied till ne is olio of us onoe more. Vi cussion which now is so common be tween the members of the different churches in public places. Those outsiders who claim that they are as good as church people need not be debarred frsm entering into the contest. What we mean is let each church endeavor to see which one, a body, can show the most christian and moral traits in their daily walk and dealings with the people large. Let all the christian virtues be studied and practiced.

The rivalry would necessarily be to bIiow the most industrious, most honest most truthful, most charitable, most peaceable and so on through all the list of christian virtues. Then each church to maintain its own integrity and reputation will be obliged to bp off all dead branches and purge itself of engraftings which produce bad fruit. Society at large would have greater respect for the churches and we believe that outsiders would soon find their claims to gooi works did not exceed the churches as so many now claim. Society would get the benefit of this rivalry and no one could deny but what it be a worthy cause of emulation. The foundation upon which the rivalry now rests, seems to be which people can have the largest and finest church, the best choir, the finest organ, the finest dressed minister, the largest Sabbath school, the most fetj le, etc.

While thinking people everywhere want to see less sham, less hypocrisy, more honesty, industry and all" other christian qualities of heart aud mind. It certainly is not good taste to argue religious points in public places. Railroad Kleetlng Saturday Night. Williamsburg, Kansas, Feb. 13, 18S6.

At the meeting ot the citizens of Yviliiatnsburg township, held at the school houso on Saturday evening, Mr. J. A. Towle was made temporary chairman on motion of Mr. Hamilton.

Mr. Towle, on taking the chair, stated the objects of the meeting in very clear and concise manner, and urged the citizens of Williamsburg township to make another strong effort to get the N. D. II. 11.

to come through the township. On mof'on, Dr. Donaldson was made permanent chairman and J. J. Mullally permanent secretary.

5 Mi. Welsh read the regrets of Mr. iogle to attend on account of sickness. After several lengthy and eloquent speeches were made by Messrs. Donaldson, Finley, Towle, Yv'elsh aad others in favor of the railroad, motion of Mr.

Towle, the chair appointed Messrs. Towle, Welsh and Mullally a committer to draft resolutions expressing the sense of the meeting. The bovo committeo reported the following resolutions, which were uuanimonsly adopted: Whereas, There has been an impression prevailing that we. the citizens of Williamsburg township, are not favorable i.o the Kansas, Ne braska and Dakota that we were opposed to voting the saul N. JJ.

K. R. township bands as an inducement to attract the.u to our township and take stock in said. full i.l yoteJ tucvcfore b(J it KesLlvea, mat we hcrcpy pro- and. ton- Icr to said railroad the following proposition, as beinz tho sense ot this Resolved, That we are willing to assist vou in every way to make this Your route, as we believe wui prove to be the most direct and of in to be of A A bftu el, and examine them, tf A woman must have a brazen countenance to let other men kiss her, and still lay claims to respectability.

The Eagle has a few facts, cut and dried, with the proof at hand, and if much more malignant spite work is manifested, an illustrated article may grace our columns. We are not vindictive, but there is a limit to our patience. If every citizen would talk for Williamsburg's improvement, and work when tho opportunity presented, there would be no keeping down the boom which would be started. It is not the location that makes frtwna flfl mufti tliA pnlprnviftfl nf the people. If you have no money to invest, you cau at least say a good w)rd, and this oiten goes a good way.

rlhe atmosphere is purer, sevener and more bracing afteff the elements have been shook up. So is it with the moral aspect. When interests clash, when dark deeds are exposed, when arroancy is humiliated, then peace reigns supreme The moral horizon is unclouded, the sun shines brighter, the birds sing swreeter all nature rejoices. We have been asked to republish an article appeared a week or two ago, in erder to correct it. We have to confess that it is such a conglomeration of words and signs that with fifteen years of journalistic experience, we are still unable to decipher its meaning.

Neither do we see the benefit thora would be in republishing it. We let it rest for something of greater interest. The Eagle bas its way marked out and shall continue in its present course though it does lose an occasional subscriber and an advertisement. 'I here may be a few persons, who think the Eagle is ventilating the dark deeds of this town through maliciousness, but we assure ou it is not so. We in common with ail other decent people are tired of the scandal that has hung about certain quarters, and we are tired of seeing these self-same persons stick themselves up as objects of special regard, when they are reeking iu moral rottenness and filth.

Their conduct has been watched aud their dark deeds are known. If the Eagle besmirches their reputations, they should blame themselves.
