Many people think that the world is growing better and tti at we are about to enter upon the millenium, and a thousand vears of peace on earth in which sin and wickedness shall not exist, but the facts which aie plainly visible do not indicate any such thing. The papers are full of aecountsof crimes to an extent never known before. All can remember that they were not so full of such reports only a few years ago, aiid if they will giye it a little thought can see that they are on the increase. Some think this is only apparent and not real, owing to greater facilities for obtaining the news, but to show that such is not the case we give some statistics from the census reports, quoted by the New York Tribune of Oct.12. 1398.

The number of criminals of all classes confined in prisons in the United States in 1850 was 292 per millior inhabitants. In 1860, 610 per million. In 1870 it was 875. In IScO it was 11G9- In 1890 it was 1315 perjicillion, or four tim33 as many as forty years before. About the same state of affairs exists in other countries, although we can not give statistics.
