Land OiTice at Lamed kar.sas Sept 15, 1387 Notice Is heivbr eiven that the foilowinir MULLINVILLE MALLET MAIN MULLINVILLE KAN, ward trip. There should be bonfires, illuminations, the firing of cannon, addresses of welcome, banquets, serenades, outpourings, all sorts of hospitalities, and a universal greeting that is as genuine as unalloyed gold and as heartfelt as undefiled religion. Presidents will come and go. The flow of our national life will take on a fuller sweep and a more perfect virility as the years go on. Every decade will make a great volume of history.

While the people remain incorruptible liberty will be safe; but whatever is yet to come or to happen, the administration of President Cleveland will always be recalled when it is necessary for truth's sake that the character of our public men should be dwelt upon, summed up or criticised By this standard will many a one be tried. Subscription (One Tear) fl.60 Friday, Oct. 14, 1887. tiotercd in the Toat Office at Mulihivillc, Second Class Mail Matter. A TRIUMPHAL PROGRESS. Without parade.

With either ostentation or pride of place. With nothing of presumption, nor any thing that resembles the depotision of more real powar than Queen Vic toria possesses, President Cleveland has had a thriumphal march from Washington city to St Louis. The greetings has been such" as oome from the heart. There are many Ways of showing friendship tespeet or esteem; there is only one Way of showing love. Several things' go to make up the position he occupies before the country several things to explain the place that he holds in the affections of a majority of the American people.

In the first place, he is the only man save one who has been blected by the entire nation since the first term of Abraham Lincoln, and Garfield is that exception. By what nefarious means the basis of a false count in several of the states, that Hayes might get an office to which he was never elected, it is not warth while here to recite. These are now a of history, about which ever diversity of opinion may have existed in either of the great parties of the country at the time of their consumption, has since practically disappeared. Jir. Cleveland to-day is the president of the wlioio people, without a shadow ar suspicion of a wrongdoing at the ballot box to cast a stain upon 'bis title.

Assucfi lie is universally honored and respected by all except those whose partisam malice will not permit tliem to do justice to nv.y one, nor recognise the higher avl nobler qualities of American manhood no matter where found or by whom exhibited. T'ie majoriiy of people also believe him to be far above the arts of the defu agoguo or the wiles oi the mere schemer and pipe-layer for office. His administration has been free from scandal to its remotest bounds an-I ramifications. A rugged manhood and a lofty patriotism iir.ve characterized his every official act. lie has had no fear In the performance, of duties plainly aecognised and honestly understood.

Favortism, that curse of all men susceptible of flattery, that banc republics as well of empires, has' never been exhibited by him in a single instance. The warth of some of the strongest men in his own party ins against it him, stormy and detractive, but he faced it witii the clame equainimitive, but bf the right. lie believed that he vas doing for the and, so believing, he stood like a rock. He mmo at a time when the country had need of brawn, fibre and incorruptible American manhood. There had been a wilderness of cant, fiaceidity and higher law.

What for years had been not despotic had been cor runt. It was a republic by oilieial defalcation and embezzlement. Strange processes of government had grown up, and in trying to make Centralization something to conjure by the constitution forgotten. Corporate power had not only become immen-c but insatiable. The gigantic growth of menus of corrupt influence over the ballot box, hich was at the disposal of the party having possession of the executive administration, had become an almost ineradicable evil, tending to make elections irresponsive to public opinion, hampering the power of the people to change their rules, and enabling the men holding the machinery of government to continue and perpetuntd their power.

Not every democrat, spoken of for the presidency and high the regard of his party and certain of his parly's confidence and suport, could nave changed all this and brought the government back to the condition that exist before the civil war, Mr. Cleveland could und has. He had the kind of courage for the work, that is so rear to-day among the so-called leaders of the peoplethe courage of the man who makes haste to meet responsibility in Mead of tem porizing with it or fleeing before it. Jlo Baw clearly from the very begin-ing what had to be don and when ho -had once put his hands to the plowhandlcs he never looked back lie was president of the 1 lands of the people the right of lie refused tc permit the national admmstarli jn or my portion of it, to interfere a single election. Sectionalism was buried in a night, Complete confidence set) led down upon the country, an era general prosperity -set in -which 'has been steadily rising to flood-tide, and the whole land is happy, prosperous and contented.

Is it any wonder then tho mau who lias done all this nAouiuJrc-ceivo the welcome ho has on ills west Our Future Assured. The future of this great state of ours is assured. We have passed beyond the period of doubt and stand now as one of the successfull states of the union. Years ago wdien grasshoppers, and cyclones and chinch bugs beset us, there was doubt of our success, it was felt that emigrants could not bn induced to venture into such a land, and many of those here looked longingly toward the east. But pluck won.

The great majority of those who were here staid and fought against adversity and finally came off more than conqueror. Emigrants did come, and they joined in the battle and shared in the victory. Now the reputation of Kansas as a rich and productive slate is well- established in all the land, and it' is even known and spoken of in other countries. Occasionally our crops do fail, but is not this the case with every state of the union, and is there a country in the world where crops are always sure'? There is no greater proportion of failures' here than in other state. This fact has come to be understood in the land and our state nowhas a reputation that cannot be impaired by the partial failure of crops or two, any more than such a failure would damagetthe reputation of Ohio.

Thus it seems certain that there is no danger that emigration to this state will cease for many years to come. And even if it should, argues the Atchison Champion, "Kansas does not really need any immigration Our population is already large enough about 1,000,100 with the natural increase, should there not be another accession, will be sufficient for all populative purposes; so Una we nee borrow no trouble on that score. "With our geographical location, in the very center of the continent, surrounded on ail sides with the best of markets, and markets growing better every year, as our raihoa'J fac llilies increase; with our climate, ood enough in every respect; with the constantly improving climatic toiiclition, changes which follow in creased cultivation as certainly as effect follows cause. With sufficient iccummulated to provide any temporary failure ot With the bravest, most en terprising and philosyhical people to be iound anywhere, a people seemingly raised by the Providence with the grit and indomiunce which laughs at what disheartens and paralyzes the people of any other section of the earth. With the romance of history which is an aspiration to persistency, and productive of the most superb staying qualities.

Willi the most alluring luturcot any commonwealth in America; the people of Kansas are proof against what oth- erc regard as calamities, and with the-motto "Ad Astra Per Aspera, blazing like an evening star on their foreheads, they will move forward as a mighty and unconquerable host, to make Kansas what Providence designed it should be agriculturally, commercially and morally, the the banner state of the American Union."
