Will of the people should be made secondary to party power, Twe We" publicans take the opposite and just stand, and the people of Kiowa county will endorse their actions at tlie 1 as if General Hooker weren't within forty miles. General Hooker never minded, but this lack of ceremony rankled in the mind of Captain pickerspn, Once Geo. Gidham, one our cayalry-man, was doing messenger work between General Sipkies and General Hooker. He rode up to the tent, in front of which Capt. Dickersqn was standing, and without saluting or dismouting, reached the message to Captain Dick' ersou.

The Captain refused to take it. "Get down and he said. Without, a word the piessenger reached through the flap in the tent, READER -IV- SHOULD READ THE -AND TUB- teas Weekly Capital and Farm Journal. Douglas, for the city of Wichita in its case before the railroad commissioners, It is a olear and concise statement of facts characteristic of Mr. Douglas who always goes into anything he undertakes, body and soul. Geo. Douglas is one of the rising men of Kansas and one of whom the Republi cans can well be proid. He deserves much credit for the manly and patriot ic stand lie took last winter iu the legislative war.

he deserves a re ward and will get it in the near future at the bands of the people, of Kansas. In summing up a four-column. double-leaded article on the all absorbing monev question the El Dorado Republican puts it in this form: "When a big, half baked, blubber lipped boy sets up that he knews more than his father and starts out to go it alone, he usually goes to hell a fluking. Gold and silver have been used as money for over forty centuries and for a few self Imposed, purchased and paid for financial leaders to assert at this day that silver is not money because they and their fellow conspirators have, by a diabolioal process of Iegisla tion, made it a commodity, is exaspera ting; and while we have no personal objection to their following the blubber lipped boy, we do not wish to see the people dragged down with them." Wichita Eaqls. Hie Jiritish editors who came over in a party to see the World's Fai have signed a statement setting forth that they liked their trip, that they saw a great onuntry, that they were impressed particularly with the ap parent prosperity ot the working peo ple, "the men, women and ohildrpn being better clothed, more intelligent and self-respecting than any of similar class to be seen in any of the old countries," and the British editors moreover express their joy at finding the American girl ''particularly bright well dressed, well gloved and well shod." All of which is respectfully submitted as showing that the British editorial head la a perfect sphere.

C. Stau. And yet these same British editors and their allies, the Democrats, would by their free trade, force our well-fed American workingmeu in direct com petition with the pauper labor of the old country. Getting Closer Heme. The dull thud of Hoke Smith's oen ax falling on the necks of tne oia soldiers is beginning to be heard in this locality.

Last Saturday D. P. Malian and W. JJ. Snell, two well-known citizens who are drawing pensions or sia.uu per mouth each under the tew law.

received one of Hoke's valentines, ordering them to report to me Doaru or pension surgeons at Winlield for re-examination, informing them that it was to their interest to Jo so promptly, as their pensions weie suspended pending further action bv the department. Wellington Monitek Piiess. Yet some of our Democratic friends tell us the pensioner-chopping cry is all a myth, i It keeps coming nearer homo every day Just the same and ngui nere we would like to enquire of our soldier friends who wanted a change. How they like it? That Porty Railroad. The present pet scheme of the people's party is the building of a north and south.

This gigantic enterprise probably Is to take the place of the very dead popul istlc sub-treasury government warehouse suueme. ir me ranroaus or the coun try, operated by men who hava had the experience of a life time to guide them, were not all on the ragged edge of bankruptcy, people would stop long enough to explain the absurdity of trying to build a great railroad on wind. The financial situation in the country and England is such that a new and unnecessary railroad to be built "by the people" would not receive the attention of financiers for one moment. If "the people" are to furnish the money It will not be built, for they have neither the monev nor the experience to engage in enterprises. To talk about "the people1 building a railroad that will cost millions of dollars Is the shallowest political non sense, if the road la to be built by foreign capital tbe few months it could (M.

The candidates are all stalwart Re publicans and will abidn by the judgment of the convention. Eveiy Re publican, in the County, should make up his mind to give his undivided sup imrt to the nominee. Eveuy tkue Republican will do so. Undoubtedly every man in the party has his personal preferences but these should be made subservient to the best interests of the parly. It is not contest between men, but contest for principle.

A contest that will decide whether Kiowa county shall endorse the patriotic stand taken by the lawful House of Representatives last winter, or whether our people endorse the tearing down of all precedent, the disregarding of law and order, and the rule or ruin policy of Governor Levelling and bis nld-de-curopei. Col.

Serrell ordered him to try. He did so, and the lieutenant retnrned with bis men covered with mud, and said: "Colonel, tbe mud is over my men's heads; 1 can't do it." Tbe Colonel insisted, and told the LieutenaLt to make a requisition for anything that was necessary for the safe passngQ of the swamp. The Lieutenant did make his requisition in writing, and on the spot. It was as follows; "I want twenty man eighteen feet long to cross a swamp fiftuen deep." The joke was a good one. I secured however, not a cubit to the stature of tbe Lieutenant, but rather his arrest for disrespect to bis superior.

The battery, nevertheless, was built with the aid of wheelbarrows and qiind. Like Jonah's gourd, it sprang up in the night. More Than Patriotism. "As a rule." said the veteran, before the Old Soldiers Club, tbe confederate soldiers wag as loyal to his cause as he was brave in defence of it. ISut toward tht last some of tbem began to weaken.

One night, when we were before Uich inond, where we bad our breastworks so close to those of tbe other fellows that we held frequent exchanges of visits, a big, long, lean chap called and asked if he utignt drop in on us for some tobacco, aud we let him come. When he landed amoog us we bad a pot of coffee boiling, soma hot bread, made in a skillet, and some mighty jucy bacon done to a turn. Tbe smell of it was line, even to us hluecnats used to good liviug, and to the hungry gray, back it must have been powerful, Anyhow, when he got a sniff of it he jumped as if be had been shot, 'What's he asked "Victuals, said lifting the lid of the coffeepot. This is the first time Jerry has failed to bringing in the golden egg when ha pulled tlie string. The People's party have abandoned their boasted principle. No one hears mentioned now the sub-treasury, the 2 per cent land loan scheme. Even the most of their supporters have abandoned these falaoies.

The Populists are very Indignant at Cleveland because of his message. Moat of them don't know why they feci bad b'it they have got the tip to "indignate" and they propose to do it. Abilene Uicfleotou. Mr. Clevelajd insisted that it is the Sherman law and not the menace of free trade that is closing the mills and mines of the country.

The ostrich acts on the same theory when it hides its head in tlie sand. Leavenworth Times. The hanging of President Cleveland in effigy iu Golden, Colorado, was the work of insane cranks. Incendiary talk is not becoming to the American people. We are a great nation and should maintain a decorum that becomes a great self governing nation.

"Hard on Sol" Jerry Simpson has shaved off his mustache, and the Associated Press yesterday said he looked like Sol Smith liussell. Ranked among the comedians, of course, and a cheap imitation as usual. Uaqlh. According to political orators last fall the high price of a tin dinner pai was the all absorbing question for working men to solve. This was under Republican rule.

Under Democratic rule the question vanishes like mist before the sun. The working-man has no dinner to put. in the pail. The Governor of Kansas always per mitshis golden opportunities to slip by unheeded. His course during the mineru' strike has been so much like his course during the legislative trouble that the people have come to the conclusion that he don't know- any better.

Burlington Nonpareil Ex-President Harrison says "My sympathy is moved for the man who, having two millions losses one, but his case does not approach in sadness that of tlie workmgman who looses the daily wages upon which his family de pends." Did any one ever hear of rover Cleveland saying anything like this? If he did, was lie sincere? Not a Democratic paper lifts its voice in howls against "official Junket ing" these days; yet Hoke Smith took his father and mother, his wife, bis children and their tutor, with him self from Washington to the Yellow. Stone Park as "deadheads" on a private railway train Had one of Har mon's Cabinet officers done so, what a howl of virtuous indignation would the Hourbou press have voiced! Toledo Rladr. In another column will be found a call for a Democratic committee ineet- ng published by request. We always try to ncomtnodute our Democratic friends in such matters, for since the T1.MK8 turned over they have been shivering with the cold. Now watch the fusion Isti try to get control of the meeting.

We are infoimed this is a stalwart move straight up. In other words, we presume to say, a move of Cleveland Democrats. Every towuahlp iu this County should look well to their choice of a Committeeman. Now is the time wiien a well-organized campaign is needed Not every good fellow and every good Republican will make a good committeeman. It needs a good organizer and a man who has time to give to such matters.

The success of the Republican party, in a great measure depends upon ofir Central Committee.
