Greensburg will no doubt be the county-seat of Kiowa. bile Edwards loses considerable territory through tho op-peration, it would always have been a bone of contention between the two sections of the county and it is probably best that they have been allowed to withdraw in peace.

Kinsley Murcury. hile the largest irt of this portion of Kiowa county has been claimed in the last two years, there are yet large bodies of land that remain unclaimed north of Wellsford. Tho pioneers nil clammonng for land contiguous to the railroad survey made two years ago. his unclaimed land is considered by many, far r.upenor to that which is now deeded, although lying 111 tne so-called sand hills. It is true that there arc many hills lit.

for nothing but grass, but as the old saying is there is "never a hill without a dale. This, land is interspersed with beautiful valleys of from to one thousand acres. Water can be had at a depth of from twenty to thirty-live feet. Hie drouth never affects it: neither does the ram wet it sufficient to detain the plow at any season of the year. The soil in the valleys is a black loam, from three to six feet deep, and in places twenty feet deep.

Kansas History. Kansas was admitted to the 1. 111011 January 20th, The first white man in Kansas was Ooronado. a Spaniard, who discovered the Gila river mid followed it to its source. The part of the stale east of parallel 100 was purchased from Napoleon in the Louisiana purchase 111 IfeOJ.

Tiie lirst American to explore the state was Zcbulon M. Pike, in the summer of 1800. Passing on west from Kansas lie discovered Pike's Peak, which bears his name. Hie ilrst settlement was made at Ft. Leavenworth in 1827.

Kansas was lirst organized as a teivi-I013 V11 20th tit KmsasNc braska bill. Hie lirst paper printed in Kansas was the Leavenworth Herald. The first, issue dated September bitii. lfcM. was pruned under an elm tree on Cherokee itcet.

1' our constitutions were drafted for the admission of Kansas territory a3 a state. The first was the 1 opeka constitution, a free state constitution made in The second was the Leeompt on constitution, known as the "Boe-ii i It was form ed to make Kansas a slave state. Three votes were taken unon it. At first tne free state men did not vote. It there-lore, was adopted.

At the second tne men did not vote and was defeated by 11,300 against and 1,875 for Tins instrument, was made in 1657 and finally defeated in Tne third constitution was made at Leavenworth 111 IhSN. was soon dropped, being unpopular with the free sintn men. Hie fourth constitution was made by the Wyandotte convention which met Tulv nth. 1Sr0. It was ratified by the people Oct.

4th. 18,18, by about 4,000 majority. Kansas under this constitution, was admitted into the 11 ion as a state January 20th, 1801. Among the men who framed our constitution are John A. Martin, secretary of the convention: John J.

Ingalls. to who the phraseology and arrangements were entrusted: Solon O. Thatcher, James G. Blunt. B.

F. Simpson. E. G. I Jobs, and many others who have since become prominent.

Hiawatha orld. Hie Chicago Times gives reports from nearly 500 points as to tho crop of corn and bogs in the northwest and southwest. It appears that the yield of corn has been overestimated and the quality ranked to high. Hog cholera made its appearance in every state in the corn belt, forcing hogs on the mar kct miich.iv.ore rapidly than usual, and probably the receipts at packing points for the remainder of the season will be less than last year. 111 Edwards county, thirty nine miles from Wellsford, is the nearest railroad station, that is on the A. T. S. F. railroad north.

Kingman, the present terminus of the Wichita Western railroad is the nearest point cr.st, sixty miles. Medicine Lodge is the nearest point south east, forty-two miles, the county seat of Barber.
