no city in the state will have three more competent. gentlemanly employees in charge of a depot than they are. The Santa Fe has pleased their patrons here by their action, and our only regret, is that Morrison could not be included in the list. What a chump a man 'who runs a paper is taken for. Monday's mail brought three propositions for advertising.

One wanted to pay us in rolled cabbage at about fifty dollars per gallon, if made into kraut. They were to be labelled "La Fragrance" and guaranteed to break up a ward pow wow if smoked according to directions. Another one wanted to sell us a set of books at the regular retail price, and give him $25.00 worth of advertising for the privilege of buying. The third was from a Wichita merchant who wanted to fool the people of Kingman county into paying fare to Wichita and buying his goods at a higher price than our home merchants charge. He enclosed copy enough to advertise Sells Bros', big show and wanted a whole dollar's worth done.

We did not a3- cept either offer for the tollowing reasons: First, our life insurance would not justify smoking the cigars; second. we can buy the books for less money here at home in three different places, and third, the Journal is not run for the purpose of fooling people to Wichita to be swindled, and last but not least, how could two families ever manage to spend that dollar. It was too money and carried with it too much responsibility. We felt after reading the three letters like taking a peep into a mirror to see if a man who runs a newspaper carried the sign of a natural born idiot, and up to going to press have not reached a satisfactory conclusion. is U-NEED-A GOOD COFFEE.

E. Jett Merc. Co. Grocery D'p't. The metoric shower of Thursday morning brought back recollections of the one we witnessed 33 years ago, '66.

Astronomers say they take place 33 years, and this has proyen a We were a 11 year old boy then back in the hills of New York, 14 miles from a railroad, and that day was to be a red letter one in our existence for us. We were to accompany our Uncle to Addison, to see for the first time the railroad cars and explore an unknown world. Going that distance with a team in York state over the hilly roads is considered much more of a feat than going by wagon four times that distance here. We did not have to be called that morning, as we bardly slept a wink. At 4 o'clock we arose and ate a couple of buckwheat cakes our sister had prepared and started for our Uncle's about 80 rods distant.

It was clear and cool and we were in the 7th heaven. For weeks prior to this the Millerites or Advents had been holding a tent meeting, made many coverts and predicted the end of the world. Our boyish mind was filled full of their interpretations of the scripture, and when a few rods from home and the stars began to fall we concluded they had guessed it and Gabriel's trump would come next. How they fell, it seemed the whole heavens was dropping and the world on fire. For a moment we halted; if the resurrection morn was oll hand, was it not our duty to appear with the family, on the other hand to go back meant the loss of a trip that had been an incentive for milking the cows Sunday nights, raking after the loads in haying, picking up stones, hoeing corn until our back ached, and besides in our pocket was 25 cents that had never been spent and represented many aches and days that we did not go fishing.

Prospective, pleasure outweighed duty and we closed our eyes and went as fast as our feet could carry us to our uncle's home chimbed in the wagon and rolled out. Yes we were scared as thousands of boys were Thursday morning. But we saw the cars, had time with that 25 cents than we could with that number of dollars now. and went home tired and sleepy. But we shall never forget 16th, 1866, as we were not only scared out of a years growth but saw the outside world for the first time.
