NO. 2. A. G. Shiney, E.

A. Shiney THE NEWS. Kepblican Ticket. SHINEY BROS. proprietors Walnut City Liyeey Judicial Convention.

We had the pleasure of attending the Judicial convention at Leoti last week. A very large crowd was there and the friends of the respective can didates worked nobly and untiringly for their choice displaying tactics known only to shrewd politicians. The Convention was called to order Tuesday noon by Sam Smith of Ness. Judge Rochester of Scott was chosen permanent chairman. There being a contest from Greely and Ness counties, those counties took no part in the organization.

The Tribune delegation of the Porter delegation of Ne3S, with the politician Gill Kinney were admitted to tht, convention. After the usual prelim inaries, of resolutions endorsing the administration etc, the convention proceeded to ballot with the following result: FEED SALEjg J- Strayed Strayed from my place on the 4th of July five sheep, two 2 years old and three about 7 months old. A liberal reward will be paid for the return of same to my place 3 miles northwest of Rush Centre and 3 miles southwest of LaCrosse. When last seen they were going west. A.

Kirch, Grand Army Reunion, Milwaukee. The twenty third National Encampment of the Grand Arrry of the Republio will be held at Milwaukee, Wisconsin, August 28 to 31, 1888, inclusive. A rate of one fare for the round trip been made for this occasion. Children between the ages of five and twelve years will be charged one half of the excursion rate. Tickets will be on sale at all stations on the Santa Fe Route in Colorado and New Mexico, and at El Paso, Texas, August 20 to 27; in Kansas and Indian Territory, August 21 to 28, good for continuous passage to Milwaukee, and for return any day from August 29 to September final limit, September 10, all dates inclusive Parties desiring to make side rom trpis Wilwaukee or Chicago Chicago can get extension of time by depositing their return tickets with the joint agent of the railroad companies at Milwaukee on or be fore September 3.

The limit of return tickets can be extended in this way to September 30, 1889. There are three lines of transportation be tween Chicago and Milwaukee, viz. Two railroad lines and the Goodrich line of steamers. The through ticket of the Santa Fe Route will be good on either of these three lines, and will allow passengers to go by one line and return by another, between Chicago and Milwaukee. The Santa Fe RouAe is a slwrt line to Chicago, both in distance and time, and makes jlose connection there with rail and steamer lines for Milwaukee.

Fcr ticket rates and information There is talk of calling a Republican district convention for the purpose of nominating a commissioner for the 3rd district. It is probable the convention will meet at Mo-Cracken. The consolidated report of the G. A. department of Kansas, just filed in Major Warner's office, shows that the total number of veterans enlisted in good standing is 17,727, a gain of 608 since the last report.

There is a general complaint about the constant prosonce of General Humidity, but the farmers of Western State say that they have one consolation in the fact that their corn crop was never so good. Iowa and Alaska are coming to the front as summer resorts. In the former they have discovered an ice cave, while in the latter mosquitoes are met which drive wild beasts' even bears, to the coast during the hotter months. An exchange truly remarks that the promptness with which the Ad ministration is undertaking the investigation of Tanner and the Pen sion office is in marked contrast with the indifference of tne Cleveland Administration when called upon to investigate Pan-Ele strict Garlend. Under the new law they hang men in Minnesota during the hours of darkness, and at Little Falls a murderer was called out of bed to go to to the gallows at 1 o'clock in the morning.

To a man who sleeps soundly and is not in the habit of early rising this must make hanging a very annoying matter. flora Bought Sold. Comer Main and Union. SWIFT AND SAFE HORSES. EASY AND COMFORTABLE RIGS PRICES TO SUIT THE TIMES.

The party line must be drawn tins fall. A Georgia paper wants to know if a spelling bee stings. "Slumber gown" is the freshest English for'night dress. A horse may pull all his might but never with his main. The total value of the crops in Kansas is estimated at $100,000,000.

If heaven was full of fat offices what a crowd of working Christitns there would be. One million five hundred thousand busbels'is the modest estimate of Bush county's wheat crop. We favor anything that is honora ble which will do away with dead is sues and create party lines. The u. 1'b.

and democrats of Star-ord county will fuse again this fall with a'hope of carrying the county. During ten years Americans have contributed $20,000,000 to relieve sufferings from distress or epidem ics. The switchmen on railroads ought to make good baseball pitchers. They know all about managing curves. It is noticeable this year that the high winds that do so much damage are nearly all confinedto the Atlantic slope.

It is a little singular, to say the least that after a man has been painting the town'J'jed he usually feels blue. Judge Strang has decided to lay aside the Judicial robe having announced that he will not be a candidate for re-election. Charley Tripplet, of the Leoti Standard did some good and effectual work in bringing about the nomi nation of Judge Grinstead. Another "son of his father" is coming to the front in politics, Garfield; he is said to be a very intelligent young man and a good jw-yer. The attempt to close the saloons in Cincinnati on Sunday 30 nearly precipitated a riot.

Cincinnati is a place where the inhabitants demand beer or blood. There will be a straight Republi can ticket in the field this fall, as there was last, and the News shall take its usual place in the front of the procession. How much of a Republican are you? Have you sufficient quantity of Republicanism in your bosom to stand up for the party lines and the party this fall? We shall see. Twenty years ago Denmark's an nual export of eggs was 900.000. Now it is 111,000,000.

Something is rotten in the state of Denmark, per haps, but it is evidently not its eggs. Sam Smith of Ness, was at the Judicial Convention in all his glory. This is one of his: "Lane county wears ruffled socks, Wichila an Greely plain, Ness wears no socks at all but get's there all the same." It is said that Kate Claxton will carry an educated rooster with her company next season. This is a luxury which few stars need, because they are capable of doing their own crowing without the aid of a rooster. It is really too bad that Billy did not get to go as a delegate to the Judicial Convention, notwitbstand ins the fixed delegation in the back room of the postoffice or the liberal provision of the P.

M. of conveyances to attend the convention at LaX. News comes from West Virginia in the columns of the principal Rep-publican organ, the Wheeling In telligencer, to the effect that General Goff may, after all, be declared Governor of that State. MORRIS I0RRI Wichita A number of ballots were taken without any change until Greely connty went over to Morse on the 25th ballot making the result Grin-stead 11, Porter 10, Hargrave 8 and Morse 9.

There was no material change until Wednesday night when Judge Grinstead was nominated on the 252nd ballot, through and by the shrewd manipulation of the Ness County delegation who cast their ton votes'for Grinstead amid the wildest enthusiasm, thus give ing him 20 votes, or 6 more than a majority, shutting 'out other delegations whose second choice was Grinstead. Col. Prouty, who managed udge Grinsteads canvass and Gill Kinney who took good care of Porter's interests not forgetting at the right time the interests of his county proved themselves to be able and shrewd "wire pullers. The Rush and Scott delegations were true to their candidates until the last The enterprising citizens of Leoti extended a hearty welcome and did their best to make all feel at home in which they succeeded admirably all visitors speaking in high praise of the treatment at the hands of the Leotians. Virgil H.

Grinstead Was born in Metcalfe County Ken tucky the year 1848 and was brought up on a farm, working on the farm during spring and summer and attending the public country school during the fall. His opportuni ties for an education were not very good but being a hard student and by pursuing his studies at home he became sufficiently advanced to begin teaching school at the age of 17 years. He taught school for several years and with good success while teaching he began to study law was married in 1870 and soon afterwards was admitted to the bar and entered upon the practice of law. In 1870 he went to Montgomery County Kansas and remained there about two years when on account" of failing health he returned to Kentucky and lacated at Tompkinsville where he soon acquired an extensive practice in that and adjoining counties. In September 1885 he came to Kansas in October located at Dighton before the county was organized; was elected Probate Judge securing the largest vote of any candidate on the ticket was re-elected and held the office till January 1889.

When this Judicial district was formed he applied to Gov. Humphry for the appointment of Judge as is well known there were seveal candidates and on March 12th 1SS9 he secured his commission, and donned the Judicial robe with all the honor and dignity becoming the bench and by his fair 'delibera tions together with his pleasing and affable maimers has won the respect and confidence of every attorney at the bar. He has been a life long Republican taking an active part in politics even before he was old enough to vote. The convention did good work when they nominated him last week at Leoti and we predict that his nomination will be rati lied at the polls next November by the largest Republican majority ever rolled up in the west DEALERS IN EVERYTHING KEPT IN A FIRST-CLASS STORE. regarding train service call on nearest Santa Fe Route Agent, or address.

Acting Secretary Bataheller, in a letter to the collector of customs at Cape Vincet, N. in regard to the enforcement of the alien contract law says that the law does not prohibit aliens or foreigners to voluntarily coming into this country seeking for employment and contracting for work after their arrival here. The base ball umpire is becoming a dangerous person to fool with. Not long ago an umpire in Tennessee stabbed aplayer who objected to his decision, and recently the same thig occured during a game of ball in Kentucky.

With a few more proofs of this kind that he is liable to turn when rebuked and reviled, the umpire will be treated with tender consideration and looked up to with respect. The New York Sua objects to the platform adopted by the Mississippi Democrats being described as the "first gun for 1802." This Mississip. pi first gun proposes to smash the tariff and the Sun as does every other intelligent Democrat, that the teriff smashing of the last campaign was what smashed Cleveland and the Democratic party. Naturally the Sun objects to the gun that kicks and kills nothing but the shooter. There is a strong public sentiment in favor of the sunflower as the Na tional flower.

The Sunflower is reported to be an absorbent of malaria and therefora can be useful as well as ornamental. Besides, the sun flower has ample and as the United States is a big country she has the best right to a big flower. The violet is too modost by. half. Some other country has prior claim on the rose, and the golden rod has an evil reputation.

It is said to be the headquarters of hay fever. By all means, then, let us have the sun flower. A chinch bug sat on a potato bugs back shaking all over with chills, his liver out of whack, his appetite slack, and he signed for some ague pills. "Pm sick of this weather," says the 'tato bug, "and I feel sorter weak iu the maw; can't wiggle the jaw, Oh! I wish I was healthy onje more." The chinch bug cast an eye on the sky, and looked for a change in the moon. When in dispair he said "I declare were going to be sent up the flume." For an instant there came a terrible crash down down through the wheat and rye; the 'tato and chinch bugs were gone to smash where they ne'er will sing the "Sweet by and Bye." Ex.
