Hid sway from the.visiou ol mortal eye, With uiysticcilies where phantoms dwell And ruins of ancient alters lie. Far back on the shores of the heart's great relm, The flowers bloomed at our childhood's dawn, And hopo'sbright sign was bent, but now The flowers are dead, and tne rain-bow gone. Its festive halls that were thronged with forms Of fair young life in the long ago, A re vacant now, and the ivy climbs 'Mid its temple ruins that aro scattered low. Like the silence resting on Lethe's stream Is tho spell that enthralls this voiceless shore; Graves of dead hopes, and only dreams: With laded flowers that will bloom no more, Broken idols, and shattered fanes, And tho still, cold iomis of a yoiUhiu! hind, Are what wc behold in our waking dreams, As we gaze far back on that silent strand. County Politics.

Don't be backward this fall "mighty mean men" sometimes get ofiico in this country. We rather expect that C. Star-bird will be a candidate or county attorney. "Charlie" is a promising young lawyer, and has a host of friends here. J.S.

Richardson will doubtless be a candidate for re-election to the ofiico of District Clerk. Personally we liko "Jimmy" and have always considered him our friend, but it is too early to say much yet, What we was going to say is this; that if you posess any qnaUficatioiis for office, the people will find it out, and place yo on the track, so just keep still and see how many of your friends will rush to ycu and implore you to become a candidate. As soon as about two hundred of the leading men of the county do this, ycu can take the matter under advisement. Thcro is a small clique a very small one indeed in this commuiiy whom, we understand, have already made up a "state" nominating themselves for some of the most important county offices to be had in the county Th2te little arrangement will be on ex-hibiton in La Crosse during the sum mer, and you must not fail to take a look at it when you come to town. We understand that somebody has called a meeting of the committee that called a convention last year, and that they intend to call a convention to send delegates to the state and con gressional conventions.

This is about the thinest arrangment we have heard of yet, and we predict for them a hap py time getting their delegates in the conventions; we will show them tip at the proper time. II.L-Dcdplain, See, The deplorable financial condition of our county is a matter that presents itself to the serious consideration of tho tax-paycrs in a very painful man- nor heightened in an eminent de- grce by the well known fact that the town owners of Walnut City, as well as those politically interested there', do not hesitate to take advantage, on every occasion of a weak and partisan Board of County Commssioneis to further any scheme that will build up themselves and the town at the expense of the people. Tho letting of the county printing to the Blade, when the Eagle proposed to do it for one tenth the (though, perhaps, not amount ing to a difference of more than $200 per annum,) proves what those in power and those who ara managing the "machine" are capable of doing. We do not believe for a moment that had the people known that they Would have to pay 20 per month for a room at Walnut City for a portion of the county officers to loaf in, that they would ever have removed the county-seat from Lacrosse, especially as Lacrosse proposed to furnish the county all the room it wanted, free of rent." This uncalled for expenditure by theboard, though small, foreshadows what we can expect in the future unlcFB the people put a check to them at once. There is hardly any limit to the authority of the Board of conimisiouers in the government of expenditures, and for good govern, ment in this respect we have to de pend a great deal on the integrity of the Boat but from the headlong assault that Haselton Co. have made on the Treasury to ''forage" the means necessary to keep alive two oi three private enterprises' at Walnut City, it seems that we have nothing id expect in the future from the integrity of the Board.

If Walnut City wants a saloon it is none of our business but when the Board of county commissioners propose to contribute $2Jnor month put of the "county treasury To aid, sustain and keep it alive, and thereby make the Respectable county of Bush a patron the aforesaid institutions it is time we thinkfor the people to "give a lecture" and if we mistake not it tvill be done in a manner that will make those gentleman' think they have suddenly stumbled inta the cavern where the whirl-wind sleeps. The Grecnbackei'S met at jSmporia on the 3d inst and notwithstanding tho protest of a number of the most sagacious men in their ranks, who Urged a postponement, proceeded to ftominato a full State ticket, made up as follows: For Governor, Itev, D.P. Mitchell of Emporia; "Lieutenant Governor, Alfred Taylor, of Johnson County Auditor, A. B. Cornell, of ftussel; Secretary of State, T.

B. Leach, of Neosho; Treasurer, A. G. Wolcot, of Wyandotte; Attorney Gen ral, Frank Doster, of Marion; Super Aitendent of Public Instruction, J. R-Foot, of Lynn; Chief Justice; H.

V. Trooman, of Greenwood. Walnut Valley the iff of Ellsworth county, a few days ago, charged with murder. The victim was a cattle herder. Register; We can recall no paper in the Third Congressional District now supporting Mr.

llyau, whose ed nor is not a postmaster or some particular postoSice. This is cant, to say the least; and legitimately gives rise to question wheather this is the Third Congressional District or tho Third Postoffice District. The steamboat, "Aunty Sally," from Arkausts City, started to Little P. ooblast Saturday, and the captain thinks they can make the trip in seven days, without trouble. Hon.

C. R' Mitchell and Mr. Harter went as passengers, the former to represent Arkansas City and the Litter to look after the interests of his mills in Win Sold. Harvey county News: The value ol the Kansas crop this year is estimated at $15,000,000. Ibis will be the largest yield ever known in a single state.

It is a big figure, but it can fall several millions and yet bent (Ji fornia's best crop, which was 30,000, 000. When we reflect on the. facts connected with Kansas, it tells of a future that eludes even imagination. Kansas is yet a new state, and not a third of her area has even been touched by the plow. It is the marvel of the century.

A man whose every look proved how hungry and penniless he was halted before an eating-stand at the central market to let his month wa ter for a while. The woman called out "Come, be jogging along! Yon won't get any food here unless you have the "My dear woman" he confidentially began, "I am not hungry; I just left the breakfast table after the heartiest meal I ever ate. I was not looking at your beautif ul meats, your lovely cakes or your rich juicy pies, but at yourself." "What are you looking at me for?" "I was wondering," he said, "if you were any relation to Lady Clare, of You have the same brown eyes, same beautiful hair same sweet accent." "I never knew her," replied the woman, her face brightening up. Didn't, eh? Well, I never saw two faces carer alik in their sweet ex pression. I wish I had your portrait painted on ivory -I really wish I had- She handed him halt a pie and a piece of meat, and as Iig sauntered off she began hunting around for a piece of broken mirror.
