The Mankato holei has been treated to a new coal, of paint wnicli decidedly adds much to the appearance of the same. Mr. Dill the ntnUl proprietor of the hotel seems to be the right man in the riht place, and 've are to learn that his enterprise and energy is mi-eti iiii' with deserved success in the hotel business. The entertainment given by the ladles of the M. E.

church at LaMar's opera house last Wednesday night, was decidedly good and we are glad to say was largely attended. We regret that want of more space prevents onr giving a synopsis of the same in detail, as the entertainment surely nu-rrited a lengthy notice. We desire to call the attention of our town council lo the fact that the well or cistern at the corner of Commercial and Jefferson streets, has been without any water for the past six months. This is a serious inconvenience to many iu that portion of the. town and the pipes leading to same should be repaired without farther delay.

Mr. J. W. Nash who will be known by most, of our readers as one of Man-kalo's prominent and enterprising business men has, we are glad to say, just received the appointment ot mail agent ontheC. K.

Mr. Nash will run between Fairbury and Norton and will we regret to say remove with his family to either Norton or Fairbury when he goes on the road. Harry Root the old pioneer correspondent of the Atchison Champion, was in town last Saturday. Mr. Root is not only a whole-souled genial gentleman, who deserves the confidence and respect of the people of this sec lion of the state, but the paper he works for is entitled to a liberal support from our citizens.

The Cham pion always has kind words to say of Northwestern Kansas. D. S. Cassell, who has for sometime past been manager for the S. A.

Brown Lumber Company, has resigned his position here and accepted a similar one with the Chicago Lumber Company, at Mauktao, Jewell county. Mr, Cassell is a good citizen and his many friends, while they exceedingly regret his departure, wish him much prosperity in his new home Parsons Palla dium. Following are the officers elected for the Mankato Cemetery Association for the ensuing year: J. W. McRoberts, chairman Win.

Metealf, secretary and D. Heron, treasurer; trustees, D. .1 Vance, Jno. Burns. Wm.

Metealf, Heron and J. W. McRoberts. The association will, we are pleased to learn fence the cemetery and put a row of trees around the same if thev do not run out of funds. Mr.

D. S. Cassell, who for the past five or six years has been managing the business interests of the S. A Brown Lumber Compav in this city has severed his connection with that Company and accepted a similar po sition with the Chicago Lumber Com nany, and will hereafter make his headquarters at Mankato, Jewell conn ty, Kansas. During his stay here Mi.

Cassell has always manifested a warm interest in the growth and welfare of our city and we had hoped to count him a permanent resident. We wish him success and happiness in his new home. Parsons Advocate. Card of Thanks. We desire to return thanks to friends and neighbors who have been attentive to our wants during the sickness and burial of our mother.

-n, Viiy. ue reason mai was those who wanted the mhuniTP they could be accommodated at Man- aild 8eB jf iu the lld the expenses of the teacher would be in if teacher. It will be remembered however that nearly all teachers go home every Friday niht and remain until Monday, thus really they only have to pay about three weeks board in all which so far as the board is concerned would only in reality be a saving of 92 25 to each teacher. The railroad fare from Mankato to Jewell City and re turn would at the very lowest he 50 cents for the round trip and the trip made tour times would amount id just 12.00 and as will be seen in the end would virtually he no saving to those attending the institute. Two thirds of the teachers of the county would he inconvenienced by having to go farther to attend the institute at Jewell City than Mankato and it is fair to presume thut the attendance would be much less if held at Jewell City than if held in thecenier of the county.

Therefore it seems to us that those who urge the superintendent to establish an alto-gelher new president by moving the institute from the center of the county are doing Mr. Durand and the cause of education both an injustice for which it may be difficult to return an adequate compensation.
