Cliwmd Uakkb, tho newly appointed Mate printer, is the first state officer who can say that he was a school buy in Kansas. Tiik President was in doubt about tlio clupoinlunt ponsion bill, and he vetoed it.

Ho nevor giveH the soldier tliu benefit of a doubt. Out of Ullages of appeals from Spark's decisions, Secretary Lamar Las overruled 49, modified 13, and left 49 to bo attended to by the courts. The projectors of the lion. Daniel ilaiinuig's now bank in Mow York seem to have recognized tho fact that the bread and butler of Eastern bitnlcs comes from tho West, and have Miined it the Western National. Poor old Missouri, true to her democratic instincts, has rejectod prohibition for tho prosent, and the inevitable has been delayed for a time.

It will take our sister on the casta long lime to catch up with the bandwagon. Capital. Of Iho 136 Republican members oi tho Kansas Legislature, seventy-six aro for Blaine in 1888, sixteen for Sherman, and forty-four divided among sixteen candidates. Of tho twenty-eight Democratic members, nineteen tiro for Clcvelond and tho ba.arco devided on five candidates. The probabilities are that "No Man's Land" will soon bo organized into a territory to bo known as A bill of that import is now pending in congress, and the territory will hold an election on tho 22d day of February Washington's birthday taking tho initiary steps of organization.

It looks as though this now hind will soon be opened to settlement, and the cry will be "on to Cimarron." Tho ravages of hog cholera over tho state will naturally lead farmers to inquire why legislation should not bo enacted that will effectually stamp out tho plague. Tho loss yearly to tho peoplo of the north west is enormous, footing up into tho millions. Tha disease is not carried in the nir. It docs not originate on tho farm. It is conveyed by germs; carried on tho loot of men or dogs or other animals; on wagons, in cars, etc.

Complete quarantine on farms would secure exemption cvon though hundreds were dying all around it. Such a complete quarantine is seldom possible There is no cure for the disease and no prevention except by preventing tho germs from finding a lodgement. Now tho only way for state to be free from the hog cholera is to enact law to take cfTuct, say May 1st. At that time hogs are at thu minnimum of numbers. Tho early pigs have all uiii marketed.

There aro few spring pigs. There is little left but the brood sows and fall pigs. The law should empower tho veterinary surgeon ami his assistant to kill every HjhrCtcd herd and every animal in it and payj for it, and tho thorough disinfection of the yards, and forbid a hog to be brought on tho place for a year. The state should pay two-thirds of the price of the hogs, estimating the val ue at the price per pound at the neai ost station. Thieo months would clean the state.

All that needs watching alter that is the railroads from other stales. Railroads should be forbidden to unload any hogs coming from other states except tit the packing houses. Cars that have contained bogs should not be allowed to cross the state from the east unless disin feeled. Wo must make up our minds to adopt such measures as those or enduro the plague of hog cholera. The legislation we have hail Is of no earthly use.

The law passed in 1884 has no value whatever. We told tho legislalnro this at the time. Sick hogs are shipped out of the state every day. Hogs that have died of cholera nro piled up on every roadside and hauled over every highway. Homestead.

Did you ever note how bleak and desolate and bare aro the surround ings of a maj'onty of our country school houses? The children have trodden tho life out of the grass in front of the door and on either side, and the wind has circled and eddied about, driving tho soil out below the general level. Barns have chilliness about them, not to be compared however, to the cold, cheerless, desolate look about many of our school buildings. A fenco und a few troos and shrubs would alter tho appearance and change the condition wonderfully. Why not plant tho trees? A few hour's time, a little outlay ot money and httlo care would make tho school house nnd grounds things of beatify, and in themselves foster in the children a regard for everything "lovely and of good report."
