Not having learned that Syl. had been sick, it took all by surprise, and Geo. being absent at the time, B. H. Bishop Immediately telegraphed to Denver to learn the particulars, but received no answer.

On the following day to the joy of his many friends and relatives, he received a telegram from Syl. stating that he was sick, and would be in Beloit on that day and for Bob to meet him there. Immediately on receipt of the telegram. Bob started for Beloit and found SvL there waiting for him, and they came up on Saturday. SyL has been sick with the mountain fever for the past two or three weeks, and his physicians advised him to go east.

Knox, at Beloit last week, who plead guilty to murder in the second degree, Judge Holt said: "Mr. Knox, taking the evidence in the case, and your own statement, I come to but one conclusionthat you are guilty, and I shall have to sentence you. My mind is clear that you have been guilty of the murder of Henry Kuchell. Our re lations toward each other have been such that I would gladly shrink from pronouncing sentence upon you, but it Is my duty and my duty must be performed regardless of sentiment. or friendship, or of any other thing.

I remember you an old man, a man or standing, a man of moral upright ness in the eyes of jour neighbors and friends. I sentence you to hard labor in the State's prison for the term of twenty-live years." AT.T. Beloit Demo- crat. My dear brother, you are mistaken a little in regard to the above items. The society feel jubilant over the fair this fall. It was a success financially and otherwise. Mumford, the gentleman ar rested iu Beloit for obtaining money under false pretenses, skipped the country, leaving his bondsmen in the lurch to the tune of Catcher Journal. A snake 20 feet long and 4 inches in diameter was seen on the Smoky last week near Hays City and killed by a lerder after a long fought uatue. It belonged to the species called Lightning" snakes and resembles a mckskin whin lash in appearance.

Ej: This, no doubt, is a snake story. Charles E. Ayer, Sheriff of Decatur county, who wa3 arrested for killing Jno' Henry, at Oberlin, had a preliminary examination before Justice Dunn one day last week and was discharged. Charley Knox is teamster at the penitentiary. He will learn the wagon-makers or harness trade as soon as there is an opening.

It is reported that L. D. Beal is ar rested for the murder of his cow boy, Dan Coop. Search has been made for the boy but thus far no trace of him has been found. Caicker Jour- nal.

The Belleville Telescone savs Wm. Foster, the youth who swore his father into jail and then swore him out again, was arrested on Friday last lor perjury, had his preliminary ex amination, was tried, convicted and sentenced to two years in the penitentiary, all inside of two hours time. you John Smith, of this place, has been engaged to teach the school in the Semplie district, in Harrison this winter, and will commence on the 14th of next month. Our opinion is that John will make a first-class teacher. Henry YanTilborg, the Sycamore of Erving township, was in the city a day or two last week. He says Erv ing is for the straight Republican ticket notwithstanding they have an alliance of forty members in that township, of which he is vice-president. L.
