OT THE REVIEW. If JJ 1 gine. Here and there iu tlie helvlui rock are little prius an.i tauin, boiling, bubbling, blubbering, and. only waiting for some carroi-hairud Eastern tourist to fll in, in order to transform the whole ravine into a savory soup-house. Just outside the "Devil Kitchen" is the "Devil's Inkstand," ivud the Punch-bowl" and "Geyser Smoke-stack," and Witches' Cauldron," and "Devil's Canopy," and the Vuive," and the team b- at Spring," and the "-Devi Fa Pulpit," and the devil knows what cite.

These things have been so often described that it is a crimo to do it again. Suffice it to say, that there is a canyon filled with fretting steam, and boiling water, and spongy mineral-streaked ground, that smokes like the ruins of recently-burne I city. Commotion everywhere. Water hot enough to boil egs harder than Pharaoh's heart. Steam that pulls and blows and shrieks and wheezes and climbs -up your trousers-legs, and takes all the starch out of the iioston school-ma'am's brings the bandoline out of the Nevr York girl's hair, and turns the bismuth powder on the San Francisco Udle blacker than her bang.

It is as though the devil had upset here his entire apothecary shop ami then turned on the hydrant. the canyon, we conic suducmy on tne "Post-office," and the "Lovers' lie treat." and DEFERS IN STOVES mm, WAGONS AND MACHINERY. Qb IIO CHAITOmO OABS EaynolcU, Publisher. Silk-Growing in America. There is good reason for bolieving that silk-growing can be successfully introduced into the United States, and gradually developed to an extent that will very greatly reduce, if it does not entirely stop, our present heavy and constantly-increasing importations of raw material used in the making of silk. The manufacture of silk has become one of our leading and most progressive industries. There are now ih this country 200 silk-manufacturing firms, which give employment to about 20,000 operatives, and use annually 5,000,000 worth or more of raw material, all of which is imported.

Tlie notable extent of the increase in our importations of raw material within recent years may be seen from the statement that the imports of raw silk into this country advanced from 738,331 pounds in 1870 to 1,590,633 pounds in 1878, Silk manufacturing iu the United States is at present in a highly-prosperous condition throughout the country and esptcially at Paterson, N. where silk goods and novelties of all kinds arc very successfully manufactured, and where soveral large silk mills will probably be erected in the course of the vear. Not only are Americans manufacturing large quantities of silk, but they are making goods of superior quality. It is maintained that the American mills turn out the best iik thread now manufactured in ths world. What are some of the reasons that the introduction of silk-growing into America? The mulberry, the natural food of silk-worms, flourishes well in many parts of this country.

The black mulberry i very common in the South, and attains a thrifty growth there. 1c is stated that no native roe in Connecticut mado a larger year's growth ihan did the morus malticauiis, or Chinese mulberry, of the speculative bubble of 1839-40. The mulberry i aid to bo of Persian origin but, like wheat, barley, rye and other leading cereals and plants not indigenous in this country, it has shown itself capable of admirable acclimation in North America. As common white and black mulberry have been found to do well iu all but the extreme portions of the North and South, we may conclude that silk-growing may yet be advantageously-, carried on in the large area extending from the liddle states. to Gulf oi Mexico and through the southern, tr- ritories so as to include a considerable stretch of the coast.

Probably therefore, native plants or trees may yet be found well-adapted to tlie requirements of sdk-worms "In several instances whore silk-growing has been attempted in country, good success has been attained. Crozier, formerly of Marseilles, France, has a plantation of mul berry-trees at Silkville, Kansas, find intend to introduce the culture of mul berry-trees at West Pel iciaua, JLa. Probably the most notable instance of success In the culture of silk-worms in this couutry has been that of the Sisters of the St. Augustine Convent, Florida, who began tneir undertaking in 1854, and have so ably developed it, that they now obtain from their silkworms silk which compares well with that produced in France. As there is evidence to show that silk-growing can, with little doubt, be successfully developed in the United States, it is of paramount importance that tire experiment should be promptly and thoroughly tried. A Trip to the (Jreat Geysers.

In the late afternoon, the sky bcin somewhat overcast, "Koch," the thought it a good time to see tne 4e "Great Gevscrs." From the hotel piazza they did not look "great-'' ii nnr sense of the word. In fact, al 11 we could see was a constant steam-cloud, drifting up and away from a i tisty brown streak on the hillside. Ruttho place turned out to be infernally interesting. The approach is very deceptive. A winding trail from the hotel leads down to Sulphur Creek and clear; and over a rustic bridge and a series of steps on the opposite bank you conic to the mouth of iievscr Canyon, where Pluton Creek tumbles along its hot an sulphur blue-green water, as the lirst intimation of the toil and trouble and cauldron bubble further up the narrow smoking way.

Across the back in and out, over and around rocks and under laurel bushes the narrow trail leads into the great bum iry.
