There is a post-office in the state named Howe and the department officials says that the name Hoxie ordinarily written closely resembles lTowe, and confusion would result. Most editors are acquainted with the man "who gets more papers than he can read," and consequently has no use for his local paper. He takes the Family Journal, published at Portland, Maine.

It contains all the news about "The Smuggler's Last Cruise," and while he is storing his mind with such useful information, his wife is reading the almanacs. Baars and Miss Mary Hamburg, by Ira C. Kyle, June Oth, 1SSG, at Mankato, Drowned In Timber Creek, Marshall county, Iowa, June 4th, 1886, Err Adair, aged 18 years, 3 months and 2 days. Err Adair came to Mankato, Kansas, in the fall of 1S84 and remained until the spring of 1885 at which time his father died. He then, with his mother, removed back to Tama Iowa, and now so soon comes the sad news of his death. Dear boy, so young and full of hope, the joy of the home, just snatched away without wsrning to leave his mother so lorely! AVe drop a tear and say God's will be done.

Many hearts here in Mankato sympathize with the dear bereaved mother and sister. D. Harrison. The County Commissioners met last Monday as a board of equalization, and transacted such other business as came before them. They appointed several constables, one trustee and a coroner.

The returns made by the township trustees in regard to the court house showed that the people were inclined to have one built. Four townships gave majorities against it, while the voters in the balance of twenty-five were almost entirely in favor of the propo sition. MCCKOSKEY. Err Adair, a former citized of Man kato, was drowned last Friday near Rock Valley Mills, Marshall county, Iowa. His mother and relatives have the deepest sympathy of their many friends in this vicinity. Hiram K. Stewart, of AVashington township, died last Monday morning.

He has beeu a resident of Jewell county less than a year and during that time has formed many friendships with his neighbors who unite with the family in mourning his departure. AVe understand that the Burr Oak band did not succeed very well with their festival last week. It was given to purchase new instruments, but when the net earnings were declared it re quired about" twenty-two dollars to make the account balance. A cow belonging to Friend Covalt, which was in T. L.

Munson's pasture was struck by lightning during one of the rain storms of week before last, which broke both her hind legs. AA'hen found she vas in a very emanciated condition and had to be killed. A. II. Dick, an entensive cattle raiser of Larimie, AVyoming, sends one year's subscription to the Review. He sees by the reports that Jew ell county leads the State in fatted cattle, so to become acqainted with stock -raisers he concluded to invest his money to the best advantage. The popular horse journal, Wallace's Monthly, is a regular monthly visitor at this office.

Longacre and Mr. Thompson, west of here, narrowly escaped death last Tuesday while crossing the railroad track in a buggy. Mr. Longacre drives the mail between Scandia and Cerro Gordo, and in crossing the track the hind wheels were caught between two cars, and the buggy completely demolished. Both men luckily escaped uninjured in the least.

The school has been a success, the teachers and young learners formed friendships during the school year that will never be effaced from their minds.

She was picketed upon the green back of the depot, and her actions were watched by a big crowd of people on AVednesday morning. It "--is thought that rhe single rope held her was not sufficiently strung and after quite a struggle she was larieted and tied by another rope. It was a pleasant sensation, as the inquisitive reporter can allege, to look over one's shoulder and see this crazy animal charging across the gro'nd with the foam flying from her distended nostrils and mouth. Mayor Hull viewed the animal and decided that it was safest to shoot her.

AVhile he was up street for the marshal and his gun, a' young man tried to kill the cow by shooting her in the eye with a small charge of buckshot. She presented a sickening sight as she ran around with her eye shot out and the blood streaming from the wound and her nostrils.
