We are in receipt of Hert Head ley 's (J ay lord Sentinel. Hert wouldn't be a Headley is ho couldn't get out a good paper. "Harney," in the Clay Center Times, tells the following story of Mr. Coleman, Republican nominee for attorney-general, and Mr. Garver, late judge of the appellate court: Coleman and Garver were opposing attorneys in a case on trial in Clay county.

"Your honor," said Coleman in an argument on a new point, "in support of this proposition I desire to read a decision of the court of appeals, a decision for which my friend, Mr. Garver, has great respect." "That decision was rendered after I ipiit the bench," said Judge Garver quickly. "Then, your honor," continued Coleman with deliberation. it Is a decision for which I have great respect." After reading the advertisements, the Delphos Republican has about reached the conclusion that there wouldn't be any congressman by this time if their precious lives hadn't been saved by patent medicines. This country has some awful narrow escapes.

Many Delphos people are acquainted with J. W. Hcrry who built two school-houses here, and we might add, built them well. Mr. Herry lives in Jewell City.

Mrs. Herry is an authority on rose cull ure. At the Hcrry home are more than 200 varieties of roses. When you think of it, that is a good many, and they all do well, some of them exceedingly well. Here is a part of their arrang-mcnts for the work.

A ditch is dug, say two or three feet across, a foot or two deep and as long as you want it. This ditch or trench is cleaned out and cemented, lloor and sides, and filled in with rich dirt and loam. The roses are set in this trench. Water is furnished by windmill and tank. The cement holds the water where it will do the most good, and the roses bloom in perfection.

Mr. and Mrs. Herry say that nowhere in their travels have they seen roses bloom to better advantage than in their own garden. They are graduates of the K. S.

A. where Mrs. H. gave especial attention to this department of the sciences. Delphos Ilepnblicun.

Hillsdale. The wheat in this part that has been threshed makes from 7 to 15 bushels per acre. Joe Scott lost a spring mule the other day. It climbed into a wagon and fell out, and as it was tied so it could not help itself it received an injury which caused its death, lie also lost a nice calf. It was lariated and got hung in the crotch of a tree.

Such loses count, after such years as the last two. Lewis Kightineier got a horse cut on a wire fence Tuesday. Cloyd Taylor is working for Mr. Crab-tree, cutting weeds out of corn. John Jackson is working for Elyea and Sellers.

Allie Milholland, Inez Scott and the Jackson young folks visited Mary Sellers at Heloit recently. Edgar Taylor bought a spring mule of Charlie Dickey. Mr. D. and family started for the mountains Tuesday afternoon.

Beviugtou )istrict. Jewell County. Nebariwka folks had their plantr cracked by un eurtliquako lust Tuesday. The rule is now that if either one or both of the pugs are killed in the tight, It shall be taken as tolerably good evidence that it was not fake; hut nothing else goes. There seems to be one onTiiK can for referring to Mr.

hilling as candidate for superintendent of public Instruction instead of superintendent of insurance. A Topeka man has secured from the state supreme court a writ of mandamus directing the olllcers of the Knights Ladies of Security to appear and show why they should not be compelled to accept the former rate from old members whose assessments have been raised in some cases doubled. The case will lie watched with interest. Jeffries and Fltsimiiions seem to have earned their money this time. Jeffries won in the eighth round, but is now going around with a broken nose, a split-open cheek and sewed-up eye, No champion was ever before so pumnieled In a tight.

Fit.slmmons was so badly hurt internally that be swooned from pain two days after the fight. His knuckles are knocked down, a thumb out of joint and his heart and spine Injured. So fur as our aciiiaiiitiince the fusion county ticket is composed of competent men, and if enough votes couht he rustled to elect them would no doubt render good service in otllce. The principles they stand for, however, have been pretty well shot to pieces. JUWKI.I.

Kb PC a Ll CAN. To a certain extent that is unfortunately true. The fusion nominees stand for the principles set forth in the Declaration of Independence, which document has "been pretty well shot to pieces" by the imperialists iu the party in power. Munkuto Advocate. Yes, we were reading just the other day in the Declaration of Independence about government land loans; the suh-treasury scheme; irredeemable paper money; moral, llnancial and material ruin of the country; the relation of silver and wheat; the blistering curse of the gold standard, which meant 8-eent corn and 25-cent wheat; haul down the flag, etc.

The thing has been pretty well shot to pieces, sure enough. The ha' loader is a great labor saving machine and found on too few farms. In making hay it behooves the hay maker to advance the work just as fast as he can with the force. In no way can this be done so satisfactorily as with a hay loader. It is a sbort-lived machine unless it is housed and cared for as it should be.

Voted Homestead. Shutters All Records. Twice In hospital, F. A. Gulledge, Verbena, paid a vast sum to doctors to cure a severe case of piles, causing 24 tumors.

After mature deliberation and many yearg of observation I have come to the conclusion that the kicking cow is made, not born. When milking the heifer the first few times the greatest of care should be given not to excite her or make her vicious. The man who will abuse a heifer exhibits less sense than the heifer. Imoa Homestead. One reason why we may be said to he a peculiar nation is that we hasten to adorn the graves of our dead heroes with (lowers and then turn around and throw bricks at our living heroes.

Great Jkml Tribune. Now we don't believe that the mirror tells the truth in all cases. A mirror reflects what the mind sees. Many of the homliest girls are the most vain and many of the best looking ones are apparently unaware of their beauty. The mirror in many cases rellects what the looker wants to see.

If a girl is salislled with herself the rellcctlon is a satislled girl. The mirror doesn't tell the truth. Miss Carlson. Lawrence. Daily Herald.

All right, llro. Driidy, we are glad to hear that the mirror is a prevaricator as we are hardly on speaking terms with it out self. Anna Carlson. There is a big crop of oats around Delphos. Flics arc just about us bad this season as ever they were, especially about milking time, and one is tempted, sorely tempted, to "tie the blinkety blank old tail down so infernally tight she'll never get it loose.

Anil this can be dune; but freiiuently, immediately thereafter, something happens a tolerably good si.ed bucket of milk takes the milker under the chin and he picks himself up from the corner of the lot in time to see bossy disappear over the hill. It Is some comfort to observe in her llight evidences that tier tail is still tied to the nigh bind leg. Delphi Republican. county, formerly the banner corn county of the state, promises to redeem itself this year, It is one great green sea of corn at the present time. Atchison tllobe.

Martin of Topeka Kansas, and several others, appeared before the board with a petition praying that a franchise be granted for right of way for an electric or rapid transit railroad system in the county of Mitchell for a period of fifty (50) years from date of order; that they he granted the right to lay their tracks tin any of the roads, lanes or highways of said county; also for the right of way for the setting of poles and erection of lines of wires for the transmission of power and light, and for such other purposes as the company may require of same from or near their power plant The Raid company to have the right to erect the poles on either or both sides of said highways, roads or lanes as may tic deemed most desirable. The decision of the board on the above petition was continued until next regular meeting. Commissioner' Proceed-intjs of Mitchell County. What particular business has that boy of yours down town at night any way? There is nothing to do but loaf and a training as a loafer will not do him any good. There is nothing for him to learn but bad habits and if he has any sense ho will put in the last half of his life trying to get rid of them.

The boys are better off at home when the sun goes down. Smith Co. Journal. John 1). Robertson, our old-time friend, formerly of Jewell, now of Kansas City, was at the Chautauqua a day or two, and said nice things about the grounds and speakers.

lieluit Gazette. Harry Adonis, the man who is pushing a wheelbarrow from Dowagiac, to San Francisco, California, walked into Hays City, one day last week. He started last January with his wheelbarrow, under contract to neither beg, borrow nor steal, or spend any money, but must earn $500 and get married during the journey, which is to be accomplished within one year. When he reached Hays, he was a little over half way, had earned his $500 and had married a wife. 4 ill girls offered themselves to him in marriage during the trip.

He earned his money mostly by advertising for breakfast food manufacturers. He is to have $1,500 for the trip if he gets through on time. In the matter of J. N. Carpenter vs.

I'hillipsbury town, Mrs. Small, who has been visiting for two months with her brother, Kev. K. The climax of warmth he fixes for about the 4th of August. i'aton was brought up from the Kandi 11 country, Wednesday, and by the prolate court declared of unsound mind. He was declared insane last summer but vas not sent to the asylum and was afurward thought to be all right. This time he will be sent to the asylum.

We hear of a accident which happened to Harvey Warren, of flarrl-son township, the'tlrst of the week. While driving a harvester his team ran away and when he jumped from the machine one of the animals kicked him, falling in front of the sickle his right hand was cut off at the wrist and his right leg badly lacerated. The young man is doing as nicely now as could be expected. From the Mankato Monitor. Koad overseers have been provided with proper blanks to notify land owners to destroy all Russian thistles.

If any overseer has failed to receive these blanks he should call on his trustee for them. The commissioners intend to do everything In their power to prevent the thistle getting a foothold in this county. J. Gift is a victim of misplaced contl- dence. Some months ago he let a man named John Drake, who formerly lived near Otego, take about 40 cows to keep on shares in Graham county.

In the hunch were ten or twelve steers, which, we understand, Drake was empowered to exchange for a like value in cows. Drake at once sold the steers, but if lie invested any of the proceeds in cows the fact is not apparent. Some time in June Drake mortgaged the cows to the Crider Commission and skipped the country and his whereabouts are unknown. A little later the commission company came up and took the cattle and shipped them, though we are informed that they were notified by the party in whose pasture they were that the cattle never did belong to Drake and that they belonged to Jewell county parties. Two weeks ago Gift got word of the condition of affairs and went up there but his cattle were gone.

Stray Notions Picked lTj). As well attempt to move a well as show well man there's a hell. I have no doubt the fear of dentil is more painful than death itself. Do not make your taffy to your friends too bitter, nor their epitaphy too sweet. Did you ever notice that some cities have hospitals and others, where there are numerous doctors, need only ceme I admire the man who can tell you of the great or good things he has done, rather than the wonders he Intends to do sometime.

If some city ladies were as sway backed as their clothes make them appear to be, they would have to call the doctor at once. Some rich men are said to live in little towns because they prefer to he a big toad In a little puddle rather than a little toad in a big puddle. Adam was never a boy himself and probably could not have understood boy nature, and for that matter, it is doubtful if any father since Adam has fully understood all of his boy's notions. Obsekver. Just now while the "water cure" business is receiving a great deal of attention in the newspapers will be a fcood time to speak of a certain '-water cure" experiment that is being carried on by an Illinois fanner who succeeded in killing 200 gophers in one day by drowning them.

He placed a water tank on his wagon and filled the gophers' burrows, using a hose for doing die work. This is a new cure and is one worth a trial. Iowa Homestead. Upon the return of Mr. and Mrs.
