Hot currents of air, too, as if from a blast furnace, came lushing in at longer or shorter intervals during tha day, which served to make the discomfort complete. To sun it up it was the most "trying" period we ever experienced, nd a repetition would ive forced us into Liquidation or something. -Up to a couple of weeks ago-say tho middle of uly-the prospect for abundant corn crop was never hotter in this section of county, but the chinch bug, dry.

and hot weather have almost ruined it. Somo fields, it js true, look well, and rain within a week or two mny bring it out all right, but there is no use dinguising tho fact this is an off year for Jewell on tho corn crop. However, if reports are to bo relied upon, but a small portion of tho state is thus afflicted, and Kansas, as in past years will have Miilicieut for homo consumption and to ship. Mr. A. is un old sutler in this country and heirs the npnlntion of being a pleasant agreouble gon-tloman, honorable in all his dealings, and is well quulifiod for the position to which he aspires.

Four years ngo ho asked for the ennie position, and was defeated by only a few votes, und retired from tho Held with many now friends. He is not a chronic office seeker, as this is only tho second time that he modestly asks the people for a publio favor. Ho ia innking a thorough honorublo canvass, and says he meets with encouragements every day to press forward in tho race. Nobody doibts that ho would make a good officer, and the people of Grant township think they ouSht to be favored this year. Salem Friend.

ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION At Dovna, Kanaaa, July 27. July 27 the city of Downs celebrated again her birth-day, it being the Slh year of her existance. At early dawn salute was fired and every body was on the move by six o'clock. A good number of stands, swings dunce halls, etc, were on the grounds the day before, and as tho sun rose in all its grandeur on tho 27th, the city on the banks of the Solomon pre sented a beautiful appearance. Flags, banners und all manner of decoration were strung from base to top of every business house in town.

No- ticeuble among the features of the day was the grand attack of the stage coach by a band of indians and repulsed by cowboys. Next came the grand trades display, every house of business in the city being represented; the most laughable feature of the duy being the Calithumpiun parade, and the Mother Hubbard band. Next worthy of mention was an army of traveling men, each man armed with a huge cane. After the parade came smart and witty speeches by some of Kansas' most talented sons. Worthy of mention was a game of base ball, Stockton vis.
