Hill took a trip to Hastings, last week, returning on Thursday last. Robertson Fay shipped two ear loads of fat hogs to Kansas City, last Monday and another tkis morning. At the reorganization of the Board of County Commissioners, last Mon day, B. F. Hansford was choseu chairman.

Married. Jan, Gth, by Rev. Jas. Lawrence, at his residence, Mr. S.

B. Kirkham to Miss Emma L. Stanfus, both of Jewell county. Mr. D.

M. Besore, formerly Coun ty Commissioner in this County, was in town over night this week, on his way to visit his old home on Limestone creek. Ice, Oli yes! is anybody to put up ice this winter for next summer' uec in this town. We have noticed no eiTort in that direction yet. There never has been enough put up heretofore to lat through the season.

Mr. Schulenberg will commence the manuiacture of cigars at this place as soon as he can get rooms. He has never done anything else but make and deal cigars and toLacco all his life, and don't know anything else, bat he understands this business to perfection. We give place, on the second page, to a long article from Dr. Walter Crew, on the subject of medical organizations.

The article was orig-ionally prepared as an address to be read at a meeting of the Jewell county Medical Society, and though rather long will richly repay perusal. It is the best written article ever sent to this ofiice for publication. John Hutchison has got the Stone Drug Stoie plastered and fixed up quite comfortable. John has got the true grit and we rejoice to see him steadily improving his condition. He ha3 lately received a large addition to his stock of drugs and medicines.

He is a careful and competent druggist, and being a thoroughly good fellow is entitled to a good trade. We are pleased to learn, through a letter from Capt. O. F. that the voters of Vicksburg Township, without regard to politics, met on the 10th inst.

and organized an Independent Greenback Club. We should be pleased to hear of every township in the county doing the same thing, The letter is unavoidably crowded out this week by other matter which came in first. We have learned, almost by accident, that a settlement was made on White HocTc Creek in this county as early as the year 1860. This settlement was brokan up by Indians the same year, but some of the men who made it aie still living in Kansas, and we have hopes of getting all their names and a complete account of the whole matter. This will be of great interest, as well as a historical fact in connection with this county, of great importance.

Mr. C. J. Aldrich, of the Brant-ford marble works advertised in this paper, was in town this week filling orders for grave stones. Ho put up a beautiful monument at the graves of Mr.

and Mrs. C. C. King's children and beautiful stones at the graves of E. D.

Heinecke's deceased wife and T. J. Berry's child. The monument is the finest ever erected in this county and deserves special mention on account of its symetry and beauty of finish. It is an imperishable and beautiful mark of earthly love to the cherished departed.

We regret to learn that, James J. Shackelford, of Mitchell county, and well known in Jewell City, has lost his claim, on which he has resided for the last four years. It appears that he had used his Homestead right, and was holding this claim under tho pre eruption act, and let his time run out. In the meantime a man by the name of Hill liomeateaded the claim, and when Mr. Shackelford went down to prove up last week, he found that it was gone beyond redemption.

While we 6ympathipe with Mr. Shackelford in his great loss we can't see as tliero is any one more to blame for it than himself. The pre-emption law is plain and unmistakable The law gives every man 33 months to prove up. If he does not do it in that time, and the claim stands unmolested, it reverts back to the government, and becomes vaeaatlaud again. We know of numerous instances similar to the above in this couaty, and we publish this more as a warning to others similarly situated, than as an item of news.

E. E. Buxce. lei ic will occupy a prominent place in our forth-coming history of the coun try. In addition to the above Mr.

Scarbrough also found an old Diary of 1870, kept by him, which contains cotes of every important event that took place in Jewell county from April 24th 1870 until August 22, 1870, the date of the organization of the county. These heretofore "missing linkb" will all be brought out in our new Pamphlet History of Jewell County A "Farmers Mutual, Social and co-operative Union," was organized at the Grange Hall, Brown's Creek, last Monday, under the auspices of Mr. Lafayette Couch, who has been elaborating a plan for such an organi-zation for several years. It is a secret order, with a 25 cent admittance fee. At the organization last Monday J.

Colburn was elected President; L. Couch, Vice President; J. R. Sheldon, Treasurer; Mrs. B.

G. Williams, Secretary; Andy Clellaud, Corresponding Secretary, and Leslie Breed, Doorkeeper. YTe have not had the pleasure of seeing the Constitution and Uy-Laws, written by Mr. Couch, but we understand there is a clause which forbids the order from warringjin any manner with any oth-er interest. Another lodge of the same order is to be organized at Williams' School house next Monday.

"Proc eedings of County Commissioners," are unavoidably crowded out this week, on account of the copy arriving too late. There were over two hundred teams in town last Monday, and trade was unusually lively with all our merchants. Times are improving.

Jim John, of Jewell Center, smoked the pipe of peace in this place last Tuesday. Oome and smoke often, Jim, if you bring your own tobacco. One of the strangest things in this fast age is that some first class wagon maker dots not locate at this place. There is a grand opening here, sure. Sam Scripture was down with the boys last Tuesday.

''Sam" is selling the 'White" sewing machine for J. K. )Ie-Lain, of Burr Oak and as he is genial good fellow, we Wish him unbounded success. George A. Sorick says its all a mistake about his having sold his farm and stock for $3,000. Miss Miller lived with her parenis on Marsh Creek for twTo years, where Geo. got acquainted with her. They were maried on the 28th day of November, last. This is rather old, but its always good.

All that the St. Elmo, the new hotel, now needs to complete It is the plaster. We took a look through it the other day, and must say it is admirably planned for convenience and comfort. The upper parlor has a beautiful commanding view ol the surrounding country the location and arrangement et the ferifial chamber is so perfect as to add to the delights of that happy institution, the to be continued. This land comes about as near flowing wTith milk and honey as any bordering on the fortieth parallel, we opine, and good things are the order ot the day and excite no particular comment.

Mr. Saunders has only been in the countj- three months but is quite as enthusiastic as an old settler about our fine country. One of the best institutions ot Jewell City, aside from its churches and school, is Marks' Hall.

This has been demonstrated in the short time it has been open to the public. No matter what takes I1 ace that causes a gathering, there is a place in which to meet. To those who like the amusement of dancing it af fords an opportunity; it helps out those who find pleafcure in dramatic entertain menls and shows it makes a splendid court room, and above all, it gives the town a name and importance that it did not hare without it. We sa3' its enter prising projector is entitled to great praise, and we hope he may be financial ly remunerated for his outlay. We understand that some of the par ties who were married on New Year's day by a justice who had not yet fully qualified, are taking the matter quite hard.

There is no occasion for this. As far as the couples are concerned the3- are as legally married as any that were ever joined in wedlock. They hav complied with the law and acted throughout in good and they are "man and wife, We considered tlie occasion an opportuni ty for a good joke and some fun but there is no occasion for all the talk and fuss that is being made about it iu the neighborhood. If the parties are not married thejr never will be, and the best thing they can do is to go right along about their connsibial business in the most unconcerned manner, in lact it don't concern anvbody else. ciiuitoii directory; SUNDAY, 20th.
