Sarah Kintzel left for her home at Sunbury, Ohio, last night, after a ten days' visit with her sister, Mrs. W. Eckman. Mrs. Eli Perkins and son, Du-can, of Concordia, were passengers through this morning, going to Webster and l'lainville for a visit with relatives.

Methodist Episcopal Woman's The Weather, H. A. Storer reports the maxi mum temperature for the past 24 hours as 72, minimum 2(1, 01 at noon today. The Weather Bureau at Washington sends out the following prediction for the coming 24 hours: Warmer tonight and tomorrow. Mr. Hal W. NYiswanger, of Osborne, who has been untiring in his efforts to build this road, lias secured the assistance of the Keystone Construction company and will bo an active officer of the railroad company while the work of construction is under way. Several reputable local men of Orange, Lincoln anil Tipton are on the board of directors, including Thomas Brann, head of the Lincoln Roller Mills; F. L.

Brown of Orange township, a largo land owner and stockman; and Thomas Corpstein, one of the leading merchants of Tipton, having also large land interests in Mitchell county. Their connection adds confidence and encouragement to a large pros-pi rous, yet isolated, farming com munity much in need of better trans portation for their farm products. The construction company undertakes the building of this road at this rather inopportune time for financing large enterprises solely because of the railroad and that the city of Salina and the municipalities through which the road will pass is willing to extend together with the individual subscription which has hitherto been given and which was almost equivalent to a donation since only common stock was subscribed and for at par, but under the present plan and in order to increase each individual sub Austria Ready to Quit, Word comes today that Austria-Hungary is about ready to end its part of the great European war and has given out the information that she is ready to sign treaties of peace. We will hope this is correct and from our idea of the thing it would go a long ways toward ending the conflict. John Doane returned from Hutchinson this morning, where he attended the County Clerks' Convention. Miss Viola Madison went to Downs last night to visit Miss Laura Craney. Emil Zimmerman was called to Madison, Kansas, last night by the illness of his father, C. K. Zimmerman.

Ed Bryant was the first Democratic sheriff ever elected in Os borne county, though several years ago when the Populists flourished, there were two or three different sheriffs who were elected on Populist and fusion tickets. Ed says he will do his utmost to serve the people faithfully and well and will leave no stone unturned to enforce the laws to the best of his ability, lie is entitled to the co-operation of all citizens. Downs Times. A nine and one-half pound daughter was born Thursday morn-ning to Mr. and Mrs.

E. L. Curl. The Christian Endeavorers of the Christian church will meet at the home of Miss Florence Ballou this evening for a business meeting and social time. The second football team of the Osborne High school went to Na-toma today to play the High school team of that place.

Mrs. E. B. Rathbun, of Downs, was burned about the face last eve ning by an explosion of kerosene. Mrs.

B. A. Towsley and John Rathbun, of this place, went to the Rathbun home at that place immediately upon receipt of the news of the accident. It is thought the results of the burn are nothing serious. Kelley Pratt, miller and all around good fellow, of Uavlord.

Tell your friends about it. Tuesday noon the four horse team of John Pott berg took a lively turn about town and caused a great deal of excitement as well as doing considerable damage. Mr. Pottberg had just unloaded wheat at the Farmers' elevator and gone into the office for his check. He had wrapped the lines securely around the brake.

Something must have frightened the horses for they took a sudden start and came at a whirlwind pace up the street south of the hotel Lipton, at which place II. S. Grace attempted to stop them, but was hurled to the ground. They kept on their course west and, at the corner of the Union State bank, they made a crash into the big plate glass front of the bank and then took a whirl to the south. Mr.

Grace again made the attempt to catch tbem and succeeded in getting the horses under control just south of the railroad track. It was a very expensive runaway, but Mr. Pottberg is thankful that it was no worse. Downs Times. The News' big auto contest in now booming.
