Recent dis courtesies shown by militants to the king, and the burning down of many churches, have inflamed pub ic opinion to a remarkable degree. Cases have been reported of women leaving other employment to join the militants, not from love of the cause, but "because the pay is better." Police magistrates have warned suffragette prisoners that if they had not been protected by the police they would almost certainly have suffered at the hands of the irate public.
