BETHANY College and Normal Institute, founded and carried on under the auspices of the Swedish Lutheran Church, is intended to furnish a practical education in the preparatory a well as in the higher branches, based on the principles of Evangelical Christianity. It is the design of its founders to make this institution in all respects equal to the best of its kind and those to whom the direct management of the school is entrusted make it their especial concern to give thorough instruction in all departments. HISTORY.

This institution was organized five years ago under the name of Bethany Academy. The first session was opened Oct. 15th, 1881, with only one teacher and about thirty students in attendance. The school growing rapidly was soon taken in hand by the Kansas Conference of the Augus-tana Synod. A building used for recitations only was provided, and subsequently in 1883 a commodious Dormitory was erected.

More instructors were added from time to time to meet the requirements of the increased attendance. During the last school-year, however, the means of accommodating students have been inadequate on account of the extraordinary attendance, it having been necessary to rent a great number of rooms in private houses, and to refuse applicants admission, as finally even such rooms were not procurable. At the last meeting of the Kansas Conference the necessities of the school were considered, and it was then decided to erect a new large school-.
