The German-American Staff oi Physicians and Sugeons came to our jity, May 1, with a company of eighi showmen and were going to remain about three weeks, but on account oi the occupation tax were compelled to disband. We can say foj the members of this company that they have done just exactly what they agreed to do with us and tho contract we made wit. them was filled to tho letter and was paid, every cent they owed. Every member of the company spent their nu.iey freely ia our city. We understand that when these Physicians arrived in town and learned of this jcupation tax being passed after all ncjessary arrangements were made for them to come, they offered to pay the same amount of taxation as resident physicians, which is $10.00, there being wo of these doctors the sum of their license would have been 820.00 they were refused, therefore instead of the city getting $20.00 it got nothing.

STAFFORD. V. KANSAS. put I could not work my rabbit's foot on tho guards that wore on duty so I did not get to go through that There are sixteen guards on duty day and night, ten on the outside and six on the inside. From there I went down by General Ludlow's mansion and there I found two guards on duty there, one in fronl and one at the back so I drove on and went down to what is is known as Machinga wharf.

It is a Government wharf. There I saw the largest shears (or Derrick) I ever saw, They can raise 120 tons, the largest weight that has been lifted with them since Uncle Sam has taken charge of them, is 96 tons. The man in charge said that they picked it up as easy as you would a 10 pound weight. Well I guess you are tired by this time so I will close for this time, hoping I may receive one page the size of one of these in return. I remain as ever Your son, It.

B. C. Cook. prison. On tho inside of the high stone walls is another wall known as the death wall, which was used by the Spaniards a groat deal.

Along this wall, 4 to 6 feet from the ground, are holes dug in it by bullets from the they used to kill prisoners, which was mostly Cubans, so I was inform -3d. From there I went to the place so much talked about, Moro Castle, this was the greatest sight I ever saw in my travels. It surely is a great piece of architectural work of man's hand. I have heard of hells on earth and I guess this is one of them and when the Spaniards had it they performed that sanctimonious part of Devil. In this place there are cells that can be flooded from the sea, I was told that it was used to drown prisoners in.

There is also a tunnel that leads from this place to Cabania. This fort is as solid as the rock of Gibraltar. It is built behind one mass of solid rock which faces toward the sea. You can see Moro Castle long before you get to Havana. From this place I went to the city prison; this is the prison where that Cuban girl, Miss Evangeline Cisneroe, was rescued by a New York Journal correspondent.

Not much to see of any importance only it would bo impossible to get out of this place when once locked up. From there I went to the old Spanish military prison known Carratollo. It was built in the yt ar of 1639. The walls are from 10 to 12 feet thick. I was in one of the dungeons; it had 3 rooms in it, one inside the other, so you can imagine about how dark it was.

protected to a certain extent. Instead of being protected trade is driven away from us. In like manner the hotels are deprived of patronage. When anything hinders the trade of our hotels, the grocery stores and meat markets and bakery feel the effect. Several of our merchants are not disposed to succumb to this new law believing it to be unconstitutional and alKogather uncalled for.

A general dissatisfaction among all tho business men is strongly manifested. There is a city debt of about 8600.00 which we believe should be paid, but do not think innocent men should pay the debt contracted by mismanagement, in a manner that has been prescribed. A LETTER FRO1 HAVANA. For something to write I will try and give you a discription of Havana, Cuba. Havana is a great city I must say, all of the buildings are of ancient style like they are In Spain and France all built of of stone and adobe, most all of the same style of architecture.

The first place I visited was the place where Columbus landed when he discovered that island there was a tree and hi under this tree they held mess although the tree now standing this is the fourth one that they have planted in the place of the one that was there when Columbus landed. The last tree was planted in 1761 making it 108 years old. From there I went to Cathedral Do Columbo one of the finest churches in Havana and in there I saw where Columbus remains were kept; oh it was sure a fine church, one of the finest alters I ever saw, gold candle sticks upon it, the inside wood work was all mahogany. There is a pipe organ in this church cost twenty seven thousand dollars so they told me, it was sure a fine looker. This cathedral was bui in the year of 1639.

From there I went to Fort Cabannis the oldest port in Havana, (the Spanish epcU Havana, Habana, it it ho a PAUL B. BOUSMAI. Nomnr pusue. GEO. W.
