A number of our young people contemplate attending the dance to be held at Dighton, Thanksgiving evening. Arrangements are being made to run a special train over for their benefit.

J. W. Smith, ono of our pioneer real estate men, has shaken the dust off his feet and located at Del Norte, a live town in tho San Louis Valley, Colorado. He will probably move his family there soon. J.

W. is a thoroughly competent business man and we wish him luck in his new location. Miss Laura E. Keove, who through several administrations has held an important position on tho News, left yesterday for Chicago, having received word that her mother was quite ill. Miss Laura is a young lady much admired and loved in this city, and her departure will be regretted by many.

Col. Terrv, tho enterprising business man from tho town which bears his name was up to our metropolis Tuesday. He was considerably elatad over having brought in five car loads of coal for this point and Leoti. The M. E.

In Ness county, farmers put up nearly a ton of buffalo grass hay to the acre. This will seem incredible to many but we know it to be a fact. All stock men know that few other grasses contain the nutriment of tho buffalo grass, and it would bo a great blessing, could we, in Scott county, utilizo our vatt fields of the same hay. Beware of prairie fires. Last Sunday afternoon, in company with Will Payne, of Kansas City, and B.

W. Black, cashier of the Pence City bank we drove to Timber Canon, bent on exploring its gorgeous depths and viewing tho immense heights that rise in stately splendor perpendicularly a hundred feet or more. Wo found it a grander and more picturesque retreat than we expected. Its shady nooks, nice scenery and clear running water, in which tho fitny tribe may bo angled for pleasuro and profit, make it a place where a king would be glad to while away many hours. Driving down the canon a short distance we came across the claim of Charles Swank, vi here he showed us some fine vegetables which ho raised by irrigation.

Pence Phonograph. While returning from Busseli Springs last week, Martin Peterson and his dog had quite an encounter with a coon. The dog first tackled tho ringtailed rascal, but was about to get whipped, when Martin came to his aid with a hatchet and tried to get in a lick between rounds. His coonship thinking it not fair play for a third party to interfere, and there being no second prasent to call got after Martin who beat a hasty retreat to the wagon, wisely coming to tho conclusion that Josh Billings did when he saw a snake sticking its hoad out of a hole in his path "That hole belongs to that snake, and sea I to myself, I am going around it." The coou and tho dog had anothor round or two, wnen tho latter "threw up the sponge," and tho coon trotted slowly and proudly away. Pence Phonograph.

Quito a good audience greeted Mrs. M. E. Do Geer, the lawyer and lecturer, at Case's hall Monday and she, if she did nothing else, showed hereelf to be pre-eminently a woman, both by what sho said and her manner of saying it. Although the lecture wes to have been a temperance lecture, she took the liberty, being an old resident of Scott, to liberally intersperso it with other things and also took advantage of tho occasion to vent her spleen upon parties who have protested against the issuing of patents to some Soott county land, the parties un fortunately were not present Her lecture was not devoid of good for the cause of temperance and brought the pathes from a number of touching incidents she rolat ed.

The young couple well known and well liked in Scott county. They have the congratulations of the Sentinel. Quite a delegation of our prominent citizens met the special Missouri Pacific train Wednesday, that carried Mr. Biek-ison, an official of that road to the front. The advantages and inducements held out by Scott for the location of the division at this point, were set forth and Mr.

Diekison expressed himself as favor-; ably impressed with Scott City and its advantages. He will speak a friendly word to S. H. H. Clark for Scott City.

Wednesday John Binsack was arraigned before 'Squire Crager on charge of having assaulted his brother with intent to kill. It seems that the two brothers havo been quarreling for some time over money matters and that John has frequently threatened to kill his brother. Monday tho fuss culminated by John's climbing upon a wagon on which his brother was seated, pulling the latter off from tho wagon and hitting him with a club. He was bound over to await trial in tho district court. The little five-year-old son of S.

P. Kane met with very serious accident Monday. Somo parties were hauling manure, having three wagons hitched together by tying tho tongues to the back axle-trees, and the little fellow got onto one of tongues to ride. Ho fell off and the wheels ran over his thigh breaking hia leg. Drs.

Bond and Bouldin were called and rendered what surgical assistance was necessary but the injury is reported a3 being quite Severe. The first com marketed in Scott county was raised by Henry Hunck near Modoc. Last week he shelled and hauled to market 80 bushels of that cereal, receiving 50 cents a bushel therefor.
