Butts is canvassing Wilson county for the Southwestern Mutual Benevolent Association, 231 Kansas avenue, Topeka, Kansas, incorporated under the laws of the state of Kansas.

A purely Mutual Association of men and women, managed and controlled by its individual members. Full amount of policy paid on total disability, yeven dollars per week sick benefit." The passenger department of the Kansas City, Fort Scott Gulf, and Kansas City, Springfield Memphis railroads have just issued, an elegant hanging map of those lines, showing tributary counties and towns. The map will be found of great value to any one doing business on or in the counties tributary to those lines, and will be mailed free by addressing J. E. Lock-wood, general passenger agent, Kansas City, Missouri.

We have a merchant in this city who prides himself on having the smallest head of any man of his size on earth. lie wears a number five hat, and if it wasn't for the enormous size of his ears the hat would cover up his entire head. What this gentleman lacks in the size of the cranium is made up at the other end. We saw him a few days since attempting to shove a pair of No. 10 feet into a pair of 9 boots, but he failed to do it.

Count' Treasurer Singleton was charged up with $85,300 taxes for the year 1883, of this amount he has already collected over $80,000, leaving only about Mr. Singleton is of the opinion that at his annual settlement with the board in October there will not be to exceed $000 delinquent taxes on his books. We think this is a remarkable showing for a new county, and we doubt if there is another county in the state where the taxes have been as closely collected. Barnum, the great showman, says he expects to make a million dollars this summer, 'and in speaking to a committee of merchants who were anxious to know the secret of his success he said "You do not any of you advertise enough. You ought to invoke printer's ink every day.

You are sleepy and want -our business to run itself. A standing advertisement in your local paper commands confidence and becomes familiar in the eyes of the reader. It may not be read very often, still it makes the name and business of a man familiar and its presence in a paper inspires confidence in the ability of the advertiser." On Tuesday forenoon of this week a serious accident occurred to one of the carpenters workiug on Jake Paulen's new store building. A scaffolding had been built for the purpose of ceiling, and three workmen were at one end of the same at once and their weight broke one of the cross pieces of one of the "horses," and all three of the men fell to the floor, a distance of at least nine feet. William Roberts was in the lead and the other two fell upon him, also one of the planks that was used on the scaffold.

Mr. Roberts' ankle was broken by the fall, but the other men luckily escaped with only slight injuries. The unfortunate man was taken to Penn's restaurant where his injuries were promptly attended to by Dr. Corinack. Probably, no other invention was ever so much importance to the household, as is the sewing machine.

It commenced in the humblest way as is the rule with all great inventions and every one, at first, looked upon it with suspicion and distrust. But all classes of people, from the great manufacturers to the humblest sewing woman, in course of time, discovered and appreciated its value, and from that time until the present, it has advanced in popular favor with rapid strides. Our attention was recently, called to the new machine placed upon the market by the Davis Sewing Machine company "The new high-arm vertical-feed," as it is called. The vertical feed is the principal distinguishing feature of this machine, which separates it from, and places it above, the popular machines of other makes. It is necessary to see this new feed method in order to understand and appreciate its many advantages.

This machine makes the most sure and beautiful stitch sews the light and heavy goods equally well runs lightly without fatigue to the operator. The simplicity of its construction commends the Davis to our judgment. In this particular feature, we believe it is without a parallel. We could dwell at great length upon its other merits, but space will not admit. The company is represented in this city by Pinney, Mudd who are promptj polite, courteous and just in all their dealings, and well and most favorbly known throughout jryr, I olloe Juds lerk S3 D.
