Pratt, wife and children, of the noble women of Fredonia seek to use the legitimate means which civilization and Christianity has bestowed upon them, to suppress any nuisance, we say God speed them. The law in all ages has been considered a great moral educator, and those who refuse to be educated, should not seek to reverse the hands upon the dial-plate ot time, and thrust us back for a century or more, into the dark and cruel past. When might made right and kings and masters ruled with undisputed sway, sovereigns then were few. Now every man and woman in these United States are sovereign to think and should be sovereign in the execution of every good and salutary law. The women and children of this country should not only be entitled to the protection the law affords, but every man should consider himself a committee of one to help, aid and assist in their protection.

Always remember that woman is God's highest, and holiest gift to man. She is the fixed star that sheds the first light upon the cradle and the grave. She is the blossom of every home, of every heart and of every fireside. She has filled the world with melody, for music is the voice of love. She is the wondrous perfume of society, without which man would be less than a beast, but with it she makes home a heaven and earth a paradise.

Brother Powell don't take any stock in the ladies trying to enforce the prohibitory law, and says "that is men's business." We have always considered our neighbor as a very gallant man for one of his age, and a great admirer of the fair sex, and regret to learn that he has "set down" so heavily upon the ladies connected with the Woman's Christian Temperance Union. Our city was honored with a visit from the following prominent gentlemen of Independence, on Saturday last V. W. McCoy, H.

M. Waters, John McCulloutrli, K. F. Masterman, J. H.

Spencer, E. P. Allen and S. V. Matthews.

Their visit here was in the interest of masonry, and during their short sojourn in our city they were royally entertained by their brothers of the mystic tie of Fredonia. On Monday morning last James Bates' barn, in'Duek Creek township, nine miles southwest of this city, was entirely consumed by lire. At the time Mr. Bates had about 400 bushels of corn, several sets of harness and a lot of agricultural implements in the barn. His loss is near 1000, with only $L'00 insurance.

It is thought that the barn was set on tire by some tramps, who were probably sleeping in the building, as the dogs on the place made a fearful fuss and woke the family before the lire was discovered. The Grip styles foreign attorneys who attend court at Howard as "dudes," and claims that that the local "bar of Howard never takes a back seat." We have never heard before that the bar of Elk county was noted for any particular ability, and as we personally1 know a few of the jack-leg lawvers of that county, we are at a loss to know who the great legal lights of that county are. Will Brother Stein-be rger or our" old friend Oliphant give us information on this matter. There is a clergyman in this city who is the owner of a pet crow, and at times the little black rascal is very mischievous. This new feed does not stop at seams, but steps evenly over them. It is, mainly, this new feed invention that places the "Davis" so far ahead of all other machines.
