The Kansas City Times has at length named "the one available man" for President, and that man is Stephen J. Field, of the supreme court of the United The Times denominates this th "tals-manie name." We expect to vote the ticket placed in the field by the democratic national convention; if the name of Mr. Field is placed on that ticket, then we shall be for him, but just now we are not.

We are for the old ticket, and object to tne name of Samuel J. Tildert being withdrawn from the field by interviewers and politicians. The people demand him as their candidate. His nomination will reconcile all conflicting dfFerances in the party, whether in locality or platform His name, of itself, is all the platform the' country demands. We are.

There is a most apparent spirit of cheerfulness on the faces of Representative Democrats which, tokens good, and in conversation all the gloomy forbodings of evil appear to hae vanished. It is clear that there wiil be no tight, no serious breach in the party ranks, and that within the family circle all fferences will be healed. The masterly management of Speaker Carlisle and Chairman Morrison, of the Ways and Means Committee, contributed largely to the result.

It seemed at one time that a. break upon the taiilT question was inevitable, but it may be safely stated that all danger is over. And now it becomes necessary to steer clear in July next at Chicago from collusion on this question, and to nominate no one who has been so far identified with either side a3 to give to his candidacy an appearance of endorsement of either protection or free trade. We cannot help thinking that had the terible riot at Cincinnati occurred at New Orleans or Charleston from prcciselj the same causes, what would have been the comment of all the republican papers throughout the north? Would there not liAve gone up one simultaneous howl that it all resulted from the lower grade of civilization existing in the south than elsewhere. It would have been charged up to southern barbarism and the rule of a spirit that glories in treason, deifies rebelism, and spurns and spits upon the mandates oi law. The south the good men of the south, its churches and schools, its scholars and ministers, its refiened society, composed of pure women and true men would have been indiscriminately assaulted and assailed, and held responsible for the crimes of a viscious and villianous mob. The wages paid to school teachers in France are wretchedlv small. Those paid to school teachers in this country are nothing to boast of. Is this an overstatement of the case? Have we not seen the very injustice we have depicted charged up to a whole people a when a judicious nomination was so necessary to success. He said in his section, (south-west) they only asked of the convention a winner. They cared little for men this devotion to names was a thing of the past; indeed, he said, a new man would be preferable to one emocraf permit his name to be used as a candidate for President.

If this is true, it settles the question. But who is satisfied that this is true? The public has not received a word from Mr. Tilden, himself, and the so called interviewers do not agree; some say he is in robust health, while others state just the rverse. Meanwhile, the public anxiously await a word from Mr. Tilden.
