Loader and family. Cimarron, had a big blaze on Tuesday night, in which a block of frame business houses was destroyed. B. Morton, brother of Agent Morton, cut his wrist badly Tuesday evening. He was cleaning a lantern glob when it broke, cutting his wrist to the bone.

An erroneous item appeared in last week's Republican stating the marriage of M. 11. "Wilson and Minnie Weber. Our informant was mistaken, and we take pleasure in making the correction. Ben Marshall is getting ready to spend the winter in California, and will go west in a day or so.

Ben is one of Wa-Keeuey's popular young men, and has hosts of friends who will join ns in wishing him a pleasant stay. The ladies of the Christian church desire to announce that they will give a Thanksgiving dinner and supper in the Opera Hall Thursday, Nov. 24, 1887. We will tbanklully receive donations from all friends of Christianity. Excitement run sj high the country over in regard to the fate of the Chicago Anarchists. Full, reports are on inside pages of this Republican. Today Gov. Oglesby commuted the sentence of Feilden and Schwab from hanging to imprisonment for life. Spies, Parsons, Fischer and Engel will doubtless Louis Lingg, considered the most desperate of the lot, committed suicide in his cell today by exploding a dynamite cartridge in his mouth, literally tearing his head to pieces, in which condition he lived a horrible life of six hours.

Sparks, the sign painter, has located in Wa-Keeney for the pursuit of his avocation. He is an artist. Harry Cunnngham has a week's lay off from duties in the U. S. land office, and is visiting friends at iGarden City.

In the counties of Ellis, Graham, Gove, and Scott the republicans were successful in electing their county officers. A. E. McMath, of Grainfield, was in the city to-day. He intends going east in a short time on a visit to friends.

H. Menkemeyer was the lucky man in the raffle Saturday night, and car by the church choir and Band of Sadie Freece 23 William Wagner 80 Lida Norton 23 this city. Ihe work has begun to ar-arrive, and is of a very inferior quality and gives poor satisfaction as far as we have seen and heard. A lady by the name of Mrs. Allen, living on Bow Creek, Graham county, was shot at one o'clock to day by a man to her unknown.

She is still alive, but fears are entertained for her recovery. The motive for the deed is unknown. The man who did the shooting is of medium size, light complexion, dressed in grey coat, stripped shirt, light overalls and railroad cap. Rev. Bright of Abilene, Secretary of the Kansas Sunday School Union; was the receipient of an elegant present during his stay in Wa-Keeney.

Maj. Pil-kenton, on last Monday, presented him with a valuable residence lot in the city of Belleville, as a token of his appreciation of Rev. Bright and the laudable work in which he is engaged. We know of no one who is more deserving of such a present than Bro. Bright, or any one more liable do the handsome than Maj.

The Republican sent out extras Wednesday morning at daylight, giving the correct returns from all the precincts in the county, several hours ahead of even those of its competitors who copied their returns from our extra. Speaking of extras reminds us that this paper has paid better than $80.00 or the news and issuing extras during its six months, existence, for which we have never charged one cent.

We aie getting our reward, however, in a rapidly growing subscription list. Heilig Brothers, complying with repeated requests, intend instructing a class in shorthand writing during the winter evenings. This is a most useful art, and can be learned by any'per-soriwith an ordinary school education. Johnson, who has been living on the Kyle place, north of town, lor the past year, started with his family and effects for his claim in Lane county last Sunday. Loren Jack leaves this evening for Bone Gap, where he will spend the winter visiting friends and relatives. His genial face will be greatly missed at the Commercial House. Harvey Jackson has been appointed night watch, and began labor in that capacity last night, at $40 per month $10 of which is paid by subscription and the balance by the city. Marshall Ufford shipped three car load of broom corn to Kansas City to-day.

After the ceremony and congratulations, the guests were served to a bountiful supper, the tables being laden with all the delicacies of the season, and greatly enjoyed by all present. All care had been taken in preparing things for the occasion, the room being beautifully decorated under the supervision of the bride's mother. An hour or two was spent in social enjoyment after supper, when the older people returned to their homes and the young people turned attention to dancing, and the light fantastic toe was joyfully tripped 'till the "we sma' hours." Mr. and Mrs Ep-pler will make their' residence in Trego county. Many friends join this writer in wishing them along and happy life, let their lot be cast where it may.

A. E. Mc. District No. 12 has an interesting literary every Friday evening at the school house.

There are so many railroad schemes on paper that never get any further, that the Republican is very slow to endorse any of them until something tangible presents itself. If there i3 anything to the above, the course pursued would indicate that the road intended to follow south of the Smoky Hill river. Such a route would strike the counties named and no other leasable route named.
