The night was intensely cold, the wind blowing heavily from the south, and it was 011I3- by active hands that the fire was kept from spreading over the entire city.

Settlement was begun in May, 1335. More buildings have been erected aud more town lots sold during the past year than in any other town in the county. It some eastern friend as a holiday present.

The young city is abundantly supplied with excellent water, has the best school house in the county, church privileges, first-class bank, grist mill, broom factory, one newspaper, two large hotels, etc. Shipments consists of grain and live stock. Many land owners in this county have objected to the establishment of corners by the county surveyor, where the original survey failed to show them, and have thought it the duty of the government to order a re-survey. Last week we were shown a letter from Commissioner Sparks in which he advises the establishment of last corners by the county surveyor as the 011I3" possible remedy, as a re-survey could not and would not be granted.

Journal. Miss Ida M. Barnes, living seven miles southwest of town, is endeavoring to organize a writing class here. Specimens of her penmanship can be seen at the post office. Her terms are one dollar for a term of fourteen lessons, one given eacli week.

It would seem that one night each-week could not be spent in a more profitable way than in the improvement of that art in which so many people are deficient.
