Land Office, Wa-Keeney, office last week two turnips of gigantic proportions raised on his farm just east of the town limits. One of them measured 264 inches and the other 26 inches in circumference. Mr. Keeney raised a good crop of them and the samples brought in were but a little above the general average. The dry weather theories that have been flamingly shown up by our Eastern cotemporaries against Western Kansas must lose their sting when such toots can be raised on the open prairie, without irrigation.

These turnips beet" all. Truly, one is enough for a family dinner. Painful Accident. While moving the old depot building last Thursday a son of Mr. B.

F. Allen was instantly killed by the sweep of the capstan flying back striking the boy (Frank) just under the chin, breaking his neck. The accident occured by the breaking of the connection between the horse and sweep of the capstan. The boy was fifteen years of age. Killed under such painful circumstances caused a gloom of sorrow to hang heavily over the community.

Under this dreadful trial the father has the sympathy of the entire community. The remains were taken to Olathe for interment Friday All About the Election. President Hayes says that Susan B. Anthony told him that she heard Judge Fuson say that Annie E. Dickinson told him M.

Gibbs informed her at Watson's store that it was well known all over the county that Maggie Mitchell had caught Frank Keeney in saying that ill his opinion it was a matter of fact and great public interest that John Nelson had said that General Grant had told him that K. Prothero's Publishing Agency, Emporia, Kan. now canvassing Trego county for the Life and Travels of Gen. Grant," is meeting with great success. Last week he obtained a great many names for that valuable work. Last week we said that Mr.

and Mrs. A. E. Warren had returned from Chicago. After reading the Leader Mr.W.

began to look for his better half but without any degree of success and now Mr. Warren thinks the Leader is altogether too personal. Mr. Warren will excuse us for "our sins of commission and omission," and we will state that Mrs. Warren isjsfill quietly domiciled with friends in Chicago.

The new grocery and hardware house of Messrs. Verbeck Blair was thrown open to the public last week. Their grocery department is, well-stocked with fresh goods, direct from eastern markets. Their hardware department embraces heavy and shelf hardware, cuttlery, paints, etc. I'heir store room is spacious and well lighted.

The gentlemen of the firm are men schooled to their respective business, and we predict for them a grand success. J. T. Scott, from Bedford, Taylor county, Iowa, has purchased 640 acres of land in town 13, range 24, in Trego county. Mr.

Scott will come out next spring and make this his home. At present Mr. Scott is sheriff of Taylor county, Iowa. Through Mr. Lang-feldt's influence the above land was recommended to Mr.

Scolt, and we trust Mr. Langfeldt will recommend Trego county to all seeking homes in Western Kansas. There is no disputing the fact that Wa-Keeney can boast of the most solid business men in Northwestern Kansas. The fact is attested to by the entire population of the surrounding counties. Standard goods in the line of hardware, lumber, agricultural implements, drygoods, groceries can be bought here at bottom prices.

So well is this fact known, that seldom do merchants in countier north and south of us order direct from Chicago and St. Louis preferring to leave their orders with our merchants to fill and profit by so doing.
