George Barcus lives in Buffalo and was born at Rest: Lawrence, April hours a day for the last week, George Barcus, a senior at the University of Kansas and editor of the K. U. Weekly, has been working behind closed doors with dancing master. It is all because of a wager with one of the K.

maidens. This is how it came about. When the members of the junior class sent out their invitations to the seniors, bidding them to the junior prom" which occurs tonight, Barcus, who is a senior, received an invitation. Straightway to the young woman of his choice he went, and begged the pleasure of her company to the "prom." Hardly had he propounded his request till there came a rival, who, before she had time to answer Barcus's request, invited her to go with him. The maiden was in a dilemma.

"Now," said she. "Mr. Barcus asked me first and Mr. Blank second, but Mr. Blank can dance and Mr.

Barcus can't." "But he can learn," spoke up the gallant Barcus. Friday "Yes, before Friday night." "If you fail you forfeit a five- pound box of candy and I go to the 'prom' with Mr. Blank." cried Barcus. Securing a dancing teacher and a pianist and turning the editorship of the Weekly over to C. A.

Gardner, his right hand man, Barcus secured a vacant hall, arranged a series of lessons covering one hour in the morning and three in the afternoon, and began the race against time. Today it was announced that Barcus had won the wager. In his five days of strenuous effort he has learned to dance and to dance well. Easy to Feel Good. BY WILL W. BARRETT. Misses Maud Stratton aud Emma and Lena Wray attended the commencement exercises of Elk City High School last Friday evening. Miss Harriet Barrett 1S working in Mrs. Bellwood's millinery parlor.

Geo. L. Barrett returned last Friday from Ponca City, where he had been visiting relatives. Victor Lee Cahill and wife have returned from their tour, and will remain here until September. Mr.

and Mrs. Paul Sutton. of are the parents of a 10-pound boy. Paul is the son of W. D.

Sutton, formerly of this place. A revival meeting is in progress at the Christian Church. Jack and Jas. Wolever are painting the front of the Schloesser building this week. Hollis Singleton shipped about IL hundred bushels of millet seed to parties in Toronto last week.

J. T. Cooper purchased a new buggy last Saturday. Moonlight evenings. There is a gang of young men in Fredonia who go to Sunday School Sunday mornings, and in the' afternoon congregate in some barn loft and play poker.

In the ball game last Saturday between the Fredonia, and Neodesha high school teams, Fredouia was victorious. Score, 8 to 11. J. W. Williamson, Benedict, was a visitor in the county capital on day of last week.

'Squire Claiborne was down from Coyville Thursday of last week. Wesley Mattnews is working on the Longton News. Miss Mabel Cliit, of New Albany, visited the latter part of last week with Miss Jean Hunt in this city. She returned home Sunday. Peck Holmberg is around town again.

Carl Thomas, son of Mr. and Mrs. P. J. Thomas, who has been at Higginsville, for some time, working for a concern that manufactures apiarian supplies.

arrived in this city on Wednesday of last week. and visited until Saturday with his parents, when he left for. Kansas City where he joined a crowd of about 200 more young men and left for San Francisco to enter the U. S. Navy as a landsman in the hospital service.

Several fishing parties hied themselves away to the haunts of the finny tribe. Mrs. Jno. B. Fishback, of Wichita, has been in this city the past three weeks, the guest of her parents, Mr.

and Mrs. A. M. Ballard. She will leave tomorrow for her home.

Mrs. T. Blakselee and Miss Florence returned to Neodesha last Saturday after visiting with relatives in this city. Mrs. N.

Hawkins, of Iola, who has been visiting in this city the two weeks past, left last Saturday for her home. Mrs. Lida Hutton, of LeRoy, is in this city visiting her sister, Mrs. P. J.

Thomas. Fredonia is going to have a band this year. The boys have been having a correspondence for some time with a view of engaging a director for the season, and this week closed a deal with Walter McCray, of Hutchinson. They will begin practicing immediately. and be in shape to begin giving concerts in June.

State of Kansas vs Dan Blinn and Wm. Blinn; charged with draining water into the public highway. Soda Johnson in Again Jail. From the Neodesha Sun. Upon complaint of Otis Pierce Soda Johnson was arrested Wednesday on charge of assault with intent to kill, upon the complainant.

There has been bad blood between them for some time and on two or more occasions Soda has attacked Pierce. The trouble probably originated over an altercation Pierce had with Al Patchen, Soda's brother-in-law, in which Pierce struck Patchen a severe blow with a billiard cue, some time ago. Soda waived preliminary examination and went to jail. HERE FOR BUSINESS! From the Buffalo Advocate. The replat of the old part of the town of Buffalo is being readily signed by those owning property within its limits and it is hoped the replat may soon be ready for recording. Several cases of scarlet fever are reported in the Pleasant Valley school district, Woodson county. Two cases are in the family of Joseph Darst. A few years ago Wilson county sent a fallen young girl to the Industrial school for girls at Beloit with the intention of trying to benefit her.

Recently she was sent home and since being here has become a mother. She alleges that the father of her child is an official (none connected with the Industrial school at Beloit) who had ber in charge at one time when she was being returned to the school.Fredonia Herald. Chas. Harding came in from Westphalia by the Sunday morning train and the way he surprised the home folks was in this wise: Walking over from the station, and reaching home at an early hour, he went up stairs to bed without disturbing the family, so the first intimation they had of his presence was when he came down to breakfast. Charlie is well pleased with his situation.

He returned on the evening freight. Two of the men who are drilling for the railroad company at Yates Center were down one day last week trying to borrow some fishing tools from the Prairie Oil Gas they having had the misfortune to get a drill fast. White Bros. have seeded about 15 acres to clover this spring and 50 acres to alfalfa, and they report a splendid stand of each. R.

F. Irwin was in town Monday and asked to have his paper sent to Roper, where he will be located temporarily. J. K. Blair arrived at this station Tuesday with fourteen cars of bandle, Texas, cattle, in all more than seven hundred head, which were unloaded and driven the same day to the ranch five miles west.

The cattle were loaded Sunday at Quanah, Texas, are yearlings and have never known other feed than the range grass. Mr. Blair says the season is backward in that part of the country and that he witnessed what the people there called quite a severe snow storm one day last week. Joe Black wood reports the corn coming up along the mail route between here and Middletown. Mrs.

Nettie Winthrop, nee White, came up Sunday from the Indian Territory for a short visit with her mother and other relatives here. The building committee of the' Christian church have been somewhat at a loss naturally as to just what the plan of the new church should be. Last Sunday Warren Matthews, accompanied by H. W. Ferris and Alvin Blankenbeker, drove up to Crandall station for the purpose of inspecting a church edifice there.

The two gentlemen last named had seen the building before and were so much pleased with the general plan that they hoped to see the Buffalo church patterned after it. They returned Monday, having attended services at the Crandall church Sunday evening and lodged with W. Crandall for whom the little town is named. Many readers will remember this gentleman as having raised the notoriously big steer a number of years ago. Our fellow townsmen are loud in their praise of Mr.
