Morning Glory coffee at Scotts. 3010 Mrs. Costello, of Ottawa, was here this week visiting her parents and friends. Tony Guber was here from Burlington Wednesday night and Thursday visiting his wife and daughter, and looking after business matters, Harold Scott, son of County Clerk Scott, is quite ill with typhoid fever at Burlington. Dr.

Tuesday night there assisting in the case. Jos. Alexander, who has been visiting a son in Winterset, Iowa, returned home Monday after a pleasant visit of some five months. He reports a heavy frost in Iowa before he left there. The Helping Hand Club met at the home of J.

H. Bair, Sept. 25, with 9 members and 2 visitors present. The day was spent quilting and knoting comforts. They to meet with Mrs.

H. Hetzel next time. S. L. Sullivant has a particularly fine lot of suckling mules on the (Blue Grass ranch at this time that he has bought in this part of the county recently.

They are most of them of the Wells stock, and are la fine bunch. They should make him some money. The public sales lately have all been goodgwhere they were well advertised. There is the finest chance in (the world to lose money by not advertising a sale. The difference between a well advertised sale and a poorly advertised one jalways amounts to more than a hundred dollars, and the difference in cost amounts to but few dollars.

A. D. Cook, who last summer traded for the Clate Hutchinson place, is here this week making arrangements to take possession of the property. He well bring his family and some stock from Arkansas soon and make his home on his place here this winter. He is a fine appearing gentleman, and will find he has landed in 2 fine community.

Orvis Nutt is building him a 16x20 one and one-half story house on his quarter of land south -east of town. He has rented the place and the house is for his tenant. Mr. Nutt and his wife will soon start for California, where they will look over the country with a view of locating, but we are of the opinion that Kansas will look good to him after a few weeks out there. The school authorities have made a good ruling to the effect that pupils shall not come down town during r'ecess.

This is a good ruling and one that parents should assist them in all ways possible in enforcing. If a pupil has any business down town at that time he or she can get permission to come, but otherwise they are better off at the school grounds, and things down town are better off too. Mrs. Fred Paris was called to Iowa by al message received Wednesday asking for her assistance in caring for her sister's husband, who is sick and helpless. His recovery is despaired of.

She may have to stay there all winter. They had expected to soon move into the Dalrymple property. but this has changed their plans. They will store their goods and Mr. Paris will board until she returns.

District 72 has just finished a fine new school building west of town a couple of miles. It is one of the neatest little schools in the county, a building to be proud of. But it seems all are not as proud of it as they should be. Some boys broke into it recently and smeared it up with mud and filth. A window was broken to gain entrance.

But they were apprehended in their guilt, and were brought to the realixation of their offence sufficiently so they gladly promised to repair the damage done. The penalty in cases of this kind is very severe, and the boys may well feel that they were let off very easy. The first big rain we have had since last January fell Wednesday and Thursday. Between two and three inches of water fell. It was needed, as the ponds were some of them dry.

many low, and stock water was getting to be quite a proposition with many farmers. This rain will thoroughly soak the ground, All the ponds and streams and put things in good shape for winter. It was a fine rain, but rather expensive one for Geo. Ross, as the storm burned his barn. Mrs.

Caroline Updegraff Parker was born in Dunstown, Pa. July 14, 1824 and died at her home in Waverly, Kansas, Sept, 27, 1907. She came to Kansas forty -eight years ago, and has experienced all the ups and downs of territorial life. One of her sons was killed in Quantral's raid in Lawrence. She was the last of her generation, her last brother dying over a year ago in Seattle, Washington.

Mrs. Parker has been a faithful and loyal member of the church since she was fourteen years of age, and was a member of the church at this place at the time of her death. She was a charter member of the Methodist church at Melvern and Osawatomie, Kansas. Five children survive her. Mrs.

Ann Stockwell, who has been living with her forfive years and a half, Mrs. C. L. Foster of this place. Mrs.

Margaret McQuie, of Kansas City, Mrs. Thomas Parker of Topeka, and Mrs. Jennie Setens, of Amsterdam, N. Y. She has not only reared a family of her own, but thirteen years ago took her three grandsons, who had been left without father or mother, and has lived to see them grown to manhood.

The youngest, Edward Parker still made his home with her. The funeral services were held at the M. E. church and were conducted by Rev. E.

W. Spencer. She was laid to rest in the Melvern cemetery by the side of her husband who proceeded her to the better world over thirty -three years ago. Her mother and one sister are also at rest in that cemetery. GOOD BUSINESS OPPORTUNITY.
