I tell you brethren, he Who Starts put to navi, gate the sea of the twentieth century' in search of prizes for eternal harbors has no earthly reason or excuse for yielding to a spirit of despondency when he knows that every prize that he wins is one qf the Masters jewels, and will add a star to his crown of re, joicing. He who thrusts his sickle in, to the worlds great harvest field, to gather sheaves for heavenly garners, has no time, has no energy, has no in, luenee to waste in yielding to a spirit of when he knows that very sheaf he gathers will cause re, joicing among the angels of God. Hartz Mountain songster call on Mrs Lillie Bishop and spr huvbirds HE PREACHERS COLUMN, DEVOTED TO Rjl HIGJPn and TEMPERA JVCF, A Laymans Talk To Ministers. I will ak the conference to be charitable enough not to charge me with having nuaisterial aspirations if i read a passage or two of scripture at the outstart of my little essay. By referring to 2 Tim.

2:7 you will find recorded this request and prayer, Consider what I say -and the Lord give the understanding in all things. And in Col, 4:17 we have this scripture, And say to Arcfeippus, take tf 7 heed to the ministry which thou hast received in the Lord that thou fulfil it. gome think Archippqs was in the discharge of his duties and this advice or reproof was sent to fiinj in the light of a reprehension; oi the correctness of that theory, I have uay doubts. But be that as it may, 1 do not design to use it as such in ottering a few thoughts, from the lain to the ministry. That the call of the ministry is direct from God and not oi uians choosing is a fact that we will assume without offering any argument either for or against.

Then taking it granted that the minister receives ais calling from the Blessed Mastei uimself, we assume that in order to be a successful minister he must be filled the spirit of his Divine Music and assume the WorK of tne uiunstrj as a life work. His very countenance should sparkle and glow with holy lire. The work of the minister is to turn inen from sin unto righteousness, to get them soundly converted ana onild them up in the Christian faith and life. This is his high calling, Jie work to which he is divinely chosen and appointed. Ye have not chosn me, says the Savior, but I have chosen you and ordaineu you.

And for what? That ye should go and bring forth fruit and that your fruit should remain, Go make diciples of all nations, that multiply liying witnesses of the saving power of the gospel of the Bon of God. No degree of scholastic accomplishment, no amount of intellectual greatness, or of classic lore can do the work of the Christian minister without the light, life and power of the Holy Spirit. It should be said of every minister as it wras said of Barnabas of Antioch, He was a good man and full of the Holy Ghost and of faith. Again the scriptures say, We have this treasure in earthen vessels that the excellency of the power may be of God and not of us. is not by might nor by power but by my spirit said the Lord of Hosts.

Lo, I am with you alway even unto the end of the world. What encouragement to tne minister these scriptures. Assurances from the Divine Master that while you are engaged in your laboi of love, His heavenly benedictions are resting upon you and His almighty arm of love and protection underneath The successful minister is one who is deeply in earnest in his Goa given work. A cold heart, a lifeless delivery or an indifferent manner will not stir and rouse the hearts of an audience. You cannot inspire feeling in others unless you feel yourself.

Gods spirit must move you in order that you may move others. A pippei appreciation ot the character and importance of your work will have a tendency to inspire within you a feeling of earnestness. Remember, my brother, when God called you to the ministry it was the very best possible choice God himself could make at the time and under the circumstances, and if you were the very best instrument that God could find at the time upon whom to lay his hand. or. if you were the fittest vessel through which God could send his love and his Holy Spirit to lost and perishing souls, how dare you prosecute that work in any other way or manner than having a heart on fire vith zeal for God and the success of his cause.

If administer believes himself called of God to preach the unsearchable riches of Christ, if he feels that he is an embassador for Christ, as if God was beseeching the people by him, if he believes in the doctrine of final retribution as clearyr defined in the scriptures, and believes that the eternal destiny of his hearers may depend, under God, upon the failure or success of his preaching, if there is any power iri him it will come out and the people will feel that power, whether they yield or not. To the young members of the conference who are just starting in the life work of the ministry, whatever you do dont get the blues, dont yield to a spirit of despondency. There is no way in which it will benefit you. Do you sayr that is asking a great deal of the ministers of the Dodge City District, out here among poor churches, fluctuating societies and various other disheartening views of your surroundings? Well let us see. You have always had plenty to eat and have always had plenty to wear, never been' obliged to use a stone for a pillow; but your blessed Master hath said, The foxes have holes, the birds of the air have nests; but the son of man hath not where to lay his head.

I rather admire the spiritual grit or enthusiasm of the minister who was being criticised for his non-usefullness or non-success in the 'ministry. Among those of his critics was a brother who arose to the conference floor and made this statement: I have known of the brothers ministry for the past twenty-five years and know of but one converted to God under his ministry in that time. The brother whojras being criticised sprang to his faet and said, Brethren NO EQUAL. (Your Neighbor Will MACHINE, which it 1 a PLEASURE TO BUN.) Sodville township still has no hope of making arrangements with the Rock Island railroad to put in those two crossings on sections lines between Bucklin and Kingsdown. Petitions were circulated for these roads about one year ago, but in doing so the petitioners failed to legally condemn the right of way where these two roads cross the Rock Island railroad.

The railroad took advantage of this opportunity, and refused to act in the matter at all. The trustee of Sodville township assisted by the county attorney and county commissioners, have been endeavoring to induce the railroad to put in the crossings. The tpwnship has agreed to do the grading providings the railroad company would give the right of way and do the other necessary work. The latest and best terms obtainable from the company have just been received from the general superintendent, who writes that $93.55 for putting in each crossing is the very best they can do, and the township do the necessary grading. These crossings are badly needed, especially the west one, as there is no crossing for over two miles except one the company put in near the center of a farm through which the Rock Island passes.

The Rock Island collects many thousands of dollars yearly from the citizens of Bucklin and vicinity for freight and passenger traffic. Just why the com pany will deny the jmblic the fcenefi of these two crossings for the sake of a little material and work, the people cannot very well understand. We un derstand the Santa Fe company freely gives these crossings when the people demand them. Summer weights just received and coming. Our Celebrated WATSON nil I SW3 Ei!
