Ogdbn, Utah, Dec. 19 The Clan problem appears to be slowly approaching a solution, aud the Indications point toward the gradual collapse of the Institution of polygamy. Last spring Lester Herrick, a wealthy bishoD In the church, owning a large amount of real estate, residing here, suddenly went on a trip to the -coast. Spring and summer passed, but he still tarried, and as he had four wives it began to be suspected that not bavins; "the fear of the Lord" before him and trreatly dreading the United States marshal, fie had taken to the "underground." A very short aojourn In Ogden sufficed to complete bis arrangements, and he has now departed for his new home, leaving behind bira three separate families for whom, however, he had liberally provided.

Those of the church prof ess to believe that Herrick will return to his old home when things are more settled, but the facts have become known that he has left his property in the hands of an agent to be disposed of; that the sule of one city lot has recently been effected, and that the gentleman has become an owner of estates in southern California; and there is no doubt that he has permanently left Utah and the church, and that If any deception has been practiced the church is the object of it. Bishop Herrick was well liked by his gentile fellow citizens aud possessed their confidence. He is a mn of more than average ability, shrewd and honorable in bis dealings. It was a daughter of him whom tho members of his own church endeavored to compromise with Judge Towers in order that the judges's character might be blackened; but the plan reacted upon the head of one of their witnesses who whs convicted of perjury and is now serving out a five years' sentence. The lady 1ms since been happily married to a gentile.

James Howard, aged 35 years, was taken from the jail here at midnight last night by a masked mob by whom he was carried a short distance below the town and hanged to a railroad trestle. Howard was arrested Wednesday on a warrant sworn out by his mother-in-law, Mrs. Wiuchew, charging hlra with maltreating his wife, who is scarcely 14 years old, to whom lie was married last July. Mrs. Howard tells a story of atrocious brutality on the part of her husband.
