He believed that divorces were wrong, so he refused the divorce and "commanded her to go back to that man, endure his cruelties, if he persisted in beinp- cruel, for another year, and then come to him and he would grant the divorce. Why did he do this? He said that this woman could be an example to all other women; that were he to grant the divorce it would be saying to all women that her early marriage and her indiscreet actions were proper.

He said that men loved good, pure virtuous women. This decision was inhuman, and from start to finish in this trial Judge Simons justly merits criticism. He allowed good, pure, virtuous" women, who had never been in the court room before, to be treated by the attorneys as they treat coarse, licentious men, and d'd not stop such treatment even when called upon by the witnesses to do so. There is one other such decision in history, made by King Ahasuerus and his "wise men who knew the times." The King, when drunk with wine, sent for the Queen to 6how her beauty to a mob of drunken men and she refused to come. For this, these wise men in their own conceit, decreed that her estate should be given to another.

Why? As an example, to force all wives to give their husbands honor.
