QUO lode Lepl Blanks iWhite CI that distinguish his administration. lie is the youngest mayor the city ever has had and the first native; born. Young Dan is an organizer of! exceptional ability. By his skill (he has converted "Goosetown," became the republican leader of the ward and now it gives 100 to 300 republican majority. In the nort wards of the city he has i been equally successful.

He has never lost a primary in his home ward. Last spring the republic- sented to become a candidate. He had a fight, of course, but that, only gave zest to his campaign and he carried every ward of the city. He began his administration by applying practical economy. He' gets out of the resources of the city every dollar to which it is entitled.

None of it sticks to the hands of dishonest officials. He has continued to lay brick and as- phalt on the streets, and outlying streets have been graded and made passable. The department of pub lic improvements is not a refuge of loafers in the Anthony administration. More than this, he has reduced the tax levy. There is a gentle side to Young Dan that is soon found.

All the people know him, and the poor and distressed always find him re- sponsive to reasonable demands upon his purse or his sympathy. He is a marr of dignity, even re- all conditions and circumstances. He never has been spoiled. Indeed, he is not of the material to be spoiled, He. receives honors and the attentions of men as a man bred to them, and accepts reverses with dignified composure.

No honor, no matter how great, could turn his head, and no reverse could shake his pride! Sim: pie and unostentatious himself, he cannot tolerate display or brag in others. Mr. Anthony is a graduate of the Leavenworth High school, of the Michigan military academy and of the University of Michigan. From the latter he obtained a diploma of law, but he never practiced the profession. After he left the university he traveled in Europe and elsewhere abroad, and returning home became associated with his father in the publication of the Leavenworth Times.

He I is married and his wife is a daugh- ter of Paul Havens, a banker of Leavenworth. Besides mayor of the city, Mr. Anthony has been postmaster. His first position in i politics was county committeeman from his ward, and by the usuall steps he has become a member of the state committee. His career has been very like his father's, Both have been mayor, both post- "master and both have aspired to I Friends of all the other candi-' dates are particularly anxious and i somewhat determined to put Bailey out of the race since he has become Vice President of the change National" at Atchison.

Meh. 28 LYITO8 grown from childhood into man's estate, if he aspires to leadership it is the rule to frown him down, but young Dan Anthony has overcome these prejudices and already is rrt the head of his party in Leavenworth county. He is a member of the republican state central committee, and has been for six years, and is mayor of a city which usually elects democrats to that office. In addition he is talked of for congress. Young Dan is more than talked of for congress; he is booked for congress.

It is only a matter of time until he-gets there. He may put off the ambition, but sooner or later he will represent his district. He instinctively is a politician. He has all the graces that combine to make a man success ful in a public career, and back of that finish he possesses a rugged courage and tenacity of purpose that dominate the Anthony character. He is of colonial ancestry on both sides.
