Excitability of the Scotch Dogs on Exhibition In Something Pitiful to Behold, The dog lover went to the show one night lately, says the New York Post, and when he came out he had changed his mind about one thing. "I will not put Bob in there," he said with emphasis. "It is all right for some. I don't mean to say there should be no dog show, but collies should' not be entered. Just you go around to their section and look at them.

The St. Bernards, the mastiffs, the bulls, the bloodhounds, fox terriers, and, so far as I could see, all the other breeds were either enjoying the affair Or quite indifferent to it, but the 50 or more collies were in a frightful state. "These creatures are the most sensitive and excitable of all dogs. They are intensely alert to every motion and sound, and no amount of custom seems to blunt their senses. They are all nerves and intellect, and they must understand the meaning of the sounds and movements around them or become frantic.

There are some beautiful collies in the show, but it was terrible to watch them. Isaw seven or eight that had gone wild from the excitement. They were not frightened nor vicious, and yet they tugged at their chains, reared up and plunged forward, yelping, snapping and wagging their tails all at the same time. One, a beauty, lay sweating and trembling in a corner of her bin with head uplifted, giving vent to almost human cries of pain. I spoke to her and caressed her, but I could not attract her attention.

She was not in her right mind. I had intended to put my Bob in next year, but I would not do it for any consideration." QUEER COFFEE ADULTERANTS. Many Unpalatable Substances Employed in Imitation of the Genaine Article. If all of the substances that pass through a coffee grinding machine during the year should be written in alphabetical order, A would begin the list with acorns, and would end it with wormwood, sprouts of which are sometimes used to give the debased coffee a slight aromatic bitter taste, says the Honolulu Star. Adulteration occurs largely in the coffee that is sold in the ground form.

Several coffee-berry factories have been discovered in Europe which were doing a large and profitable business by, molding an admixture of tan bark, stove rust, clay, sawdust, chickory, coffee sediment and coffee meal into a neat berry by the aid of some agglutinant; and these berries were so well made that the deception was not discovered for a long time. This production had a large sale among the lower classes of Russia and Poland, and, mixed with the genuine coffee berry, its sale was quite lively in other parts of Europe. Unroasted coffee berries are often made from oat and rye flour and corn meal. The natural aroma of these grains is destroyed by some process, and, after the proper amount of coffee aroma is added, the berries are formed and caused to maintain their shape by some adhesive substance. The test usually employed to discover this deception is to place the beans in a receptacle containing warm water; this will dissolve them in a few hours.

END OF A GREAT EATER. The Champion Food Destroyer of Belgium Had to Leave Just One Boiled Egg. Belgium mourns, for the champion eater of the country is dead, says a recent report from London. An extraordinary man he was. One day he entered into an agreement with a hotelkeeper, according to which he promised to pay a fixed sum for a dinner, but stipulated that he was to have all the food he wanted.

The sum fixed was small, and great, therefore, was the disgust of the hotelkeeper when he discovered at the end of the dinner that his guest had eaten two stewed rabbits and a whole calf's head. On another occasion he ate for a wager 12 yards of sausages and black pudding. He recently accepted a challenge to eat 70 hard-boiled eggs in one hour, and he almost accomplished this feat, since he devoured 69 in the specified time. The fact that he lost the wager, however, and through one egg. preyed on his mind and he became sick.

Doctors were summoned and said that he was suffering from indigestion. but his friends say that it was nothing but. worry over this one egg which made him sick and which finally brought him to his grave. Tell the news to the editor. Don't gossip.
