CONTIHUATIOH OF THE SENTINEL, PRESCOTT, LIHfi COUNTY, KANSAS. NUMBER XV. vi A Historical I Newspaper. PLEASANTON, LINN COUNTY, SATURDAY, OCT. 4, 1902.

One Dollar a Year. 6 Mos 50c. 3Mos. 25c. VOLUME III, THE BORDER SENTINEL.

THE ARMY GRAYBACK. him from sharing with them, their loaves and fishes. Tin: Border Sentinel has had no intimation that Colonel Snoddy was an aspirant for anything outside of his law practice. He has never called on ns since we have been in business in fact, wefhave been unable to tell whether he he liked or disliked the write-up we gave him a fews weeks ago. No intimetion has come from him to us, regarding the matter.

But, its the Colonels way and his way hell have, individually, giving to others that same free-born right. Colonel Snoddy is a scholarly gentleman and if he should be fortunate enough to reach the pinnacle of fame to which he is aspiring, be would honor the seat and represent his constituency in a manner that would reflect credit upon himself and our State. The IBorder Sentinel, has voluntarily, proffered its support to the Hon. Charles Curtis, and it can assign no reason for discontinuing that support and, we do not wish to be understood that Col. Snoddy has asked us to do anything of this kind.

pel us to eat crow. And, we are pleased to have such company as Ed. Howe, of the Atchison Globe Billy Greason, of the Miami County Republican Henry J. Allen, of the Ottawa Herald William Allen White, of the Emporia Gazette John N. Barnes, of the Blue Mound Sun; John S.

Gilmore, of the Fredonia Citizen, and the forty-two other Republican editors throughout the State, who are showing an independence of, character that cannot be hoodwinked by political bosses or state convention manipulators. The cowardly policy papers we have no use for. Theres two horns to the animal take hold on one side or the other, and honestly, let the people know how and where you stand. The Linn County Re public, in its last weeks issue, declared itself, but, there are others, in Linn county, too, who are displaying death-like stillness, hoping, we assume, to thereby win political favors at both ends. Such journalism smacks strongly of deceit.

Compliments James K. Powers, Supt. National Cemetery. Springfield, Mo. The army grayback has been known in all wars and rumors of wars, from the time Saint Michael fought and cast him out, down to our late unpleasantness with Spain.

If we are properly informed, he was no respector of persons, from the fact that he was with the privates in the front rank, as well as with the officers in the rear. He was very patriotic, for it has been said -Whenever patriotisms prejudice oerpowers Theres no ons among you denies There was more soldiers blood in his veins in ours in proportion, of course, to his'size. As a military genius, he was never equalled, or surpassed, from the fact Whenever you attacked him with guile or surprise, None of your movements his ardor could smother For if you drove him from one armpit, He soon was found safe in the other. He would attack you in the flank while making this movement, Do you remember when in battle at your back he -stood Do you also remember, whenever you pulled those shirts down over your heads And those draweis up over your feet Short was the tail, for you always failed To make those two ends meet. But compensation Is everywhere, And heres where you get your pay back, As through that breech you chanced to reach, And capture a straggling grayback.

Do you remember whenever he laid siege at your Like Billy, the marcher and bummer, door, He would not care, for he would stay there. Like Grant, though it took him all summer At midnights hour when all was still. The grayback would form battalion drill, Across my ribs theyd form in line In platoons break across my spine. The qolonel then the orders gave Says he There must a charge be made, So on they went from head to toe, -r Then about theyd face and back theyd go. And when again theyd form their line From ribs to ribs across my spine.

The colonel's voice you plain could hear. By the righf of companies to the rear. Says he My boys, now Ill be hanged Youre the finest graybacks in the laud, Im sure Ive never seen your match In routing soldiers and making them scratch. After the war is over. Old graybacks well give you a rest, You were with us in our grief and joys, You always tried and did your best, You have tickled most of the boys.

A. Hammer. COL. SNODDY FOR U. S.

SENATOR. Col. James D. Snoddy, of Pleasanton, has duly announced himself a candidate for United States Senator, to suceeed W. A.

Harris. His announcement is in his own peculiar style, every word of which, he means, for he does not deal in buncombe merely for the sake of being listened to. It says To the People of Kansas The time seems to have come at which some one who is not holding an office and asking for another or two, should signify a willingness to accept the honor and salary and undertake to perform the duties of United States Senator. That hour having come, with some diffidence, offer to take that office for six years from the 4th of March next. Like others, I am vain enough to think that I am fairly well equipped for that office and I know that I am so situated that I can render to the government and to the state untrammeled service, and such as looks only to the good of the nation and the state.

I am, and shall be, under but one obligation, and that is that of patriotism and shall know but one duty, and that is public service. know nothing of political culture, and shall not learn it and I shall devote no time nor energy to party horticulture in order that a few weeds may bloom as attractive political posies. I am known to no political faction, clique or coterie, and have but one political faith, and that I have ever had. I am a Republican. If I shall be elected to the senate I shall be gratified.

If I shall not be elected I shall continue to be a Republican. Very Respectfully, JAMES D. SNODDY. The expose of Kellys transactions in the past, has been, already, sufficiently aired through these different newspapers, and verified facts have been established, and distributed throughout every. Congressional district in the state, to apprise the voters of Kellys rascality, and what they may expect of him if he is elected to handle and control the States finances. In order to save the states good name, as well as her monies, the honest Republican voters of Kansas should cast their ballots in such a way that T. T. Kelly, as the Republican candidate for State Treasurer for Kansas, will meet with an ignominious defeat.

Kansas needs no Nebraska episode, and in order to thwart it, down those of unsavory reputation, like Kelly, and thereby save the honor and good name of our beloved State. So far as The Border Sentinel is concerned, honor shall have precedence over politics. The Republican party cannot com COUNTY BEAT NEWS. Mrs. Ora Wortman, Editress.
