John Crown and other anti-slavery men were always welcome to the shelter of their roof. Eddy now lives, and the next night be took shelter at Mr Kerrs, but wax eo close presapJ by a band of Misson-i ian that before morning he was compelled to leave the house and seek a hiding place in the brush and timber along the creek until morn-ing, when he made his way to Kirk-patrics place between here and Lawrence, and from there on through that place to Leavcnsworth anil to a place of safety. J1 i and Kind tr 'V Sullivan had become dvgnsted with the way things Were being run in this country, and had determined to return back east. He had hired men to drive his stock, and was on bis way. About two miles northeast of here a band of desperados came upon them, ani he was compelled to put spurs to his horse and make for a hiding place in the timber.

About this time they came up onto Cal Kerr, a brother of E. that we remember of his mentioning and halting him asked his with regard to his politics. When they foun 1 out that he was on the opposite side from what they wished, they pronounced him as theis prisoner, evidently for the purpose of hanging him to the first trt they came to. Cat was not so easily taken, however, hut putlm the pony ,1 Ag, rode with laio' gutening speed over the hill past where Ed Redding now lives and down precipieces where at any other time it would be difficult to go oli foot, to a place of safety In the timber. Their hiding place was so closly watched it was three days before Air Sullivan dared to venture out, and then by the rout mentioned before, made his Way to Leavenworth, and from there to north Missouri, where he waited until his stock and goods arrived.

For some time this country was so near inJ1 the controll of organic 1 bands of horse th'cves I outlaws that the lives and piUpertr of the settlers wTeat all times in danger. Mr. Kerr says one of the greatest troubles they cxpetienced in making a defence was to find men they ponld depend on, as a gr.at many were trying to carry water on both shoulders, and it was diffici.lt to tell who could be trusted. These depredations continued, and the bands made the bluffs and timber along Big Sugar one of their principle hiding places until the advent of Jenneson and Montgomery, with their darirg troops proved a terror to these bauds. Much of the most interesting part of history remains unwritten, and are like the above, thing that have happened right on the ground over which we walk every day.

The case of the Stale vs McBride was called in Justice Brown's court Wednesday morning, when JolinC. Cannon, County Attorney, and R. G. Blue of Pleasanton appeared for the btate, and James D. Snoddy of LaCygne for the defense.

The day and until about nine oclock was taken up in securing a jury and hearing evidence. The argument was opened for the state by Cannon, followed for the defense by Snodly, closed by Blue, and was a thof' ougn i "new of the evidence and the merits ol case. The jury retired about 12 -d after betug ou' about tan minutes i -rned a verdict of guilty of assault battery and the fine was assessed atJr and cost, amounting in all to about $47. An appeal was hemodially taken, and it ill come up again at the next term of the District Court. Tin interest of the case and the promi nenc cof the attorneys drew a krg crowd, who watched with marked attention every step in the progress it .3 1.
