Last Monday morning Betty had an unusually severe attack of the hysterics over the mishap of Yip, who was foolish enough to swallow a spoonful of concentrated lye. We thought that if she was so mindful of 'little things it would be a good time for us to call out an expression of love and affection, so we swallowed the lye, and commenced to spit out soap at therate of one quart every ten minutes. Betty looked at us writhing in all the apparent agonies of death, and commenced, but no as she had done with Yip, by calling us her own true love her only solace the sweetest pet in Mound City bnt she spit out vituperation in a denser volume than we spit out the soap. Quite a number of strangess attended the Sabbath School Convention recently held in the Baptist Church of this place. We were present at several of the meetings, and found them very interesting and instructive, especially the children's meeting on Sabbath afternoon. On that occasion Rev.

I. D. Wood, of Pleasanton gave an object lesson which elicited the general attention of the scholars, and their aptness in answering the questions asked, reflected great credit upon their superintendent and teachers. Revs. Collins and Clark delivered short and appropriate addresses, exhibiting a commendable earnestness in the spiritual education of the children.

The Rev. Isaac You may be witty but not wise. An unmarried mania the only enviable creature on earth. There is no married man who does not in his heart of hearts desire to be single, however loudlj he may profess otherwise, especially in the presence of his wife; and there is not a wowan, married or single, who does not desire to be a single gentleman. The reason, is plain, ter nature tells no lies. Happiness is the object of all, and it is only a fool who can not comprehend tbat the only tranquil state is that of a single gentleman.

Everybody calls him uncle, and if there is a smile or a kind word set? afloat he is sure to catch it if a kick or a frown it never reaches him. Besides there are no children crying for bread and clothes, and no wife to scold and look after with lust-leas eyes turned in all directions. The cojdi-tion is favorable to thought. Single gentlemen are the wisest of mankim'. -History records but one exception to the fact, viz Solomon.

But this proves my statement, for marrying was his only folly. A man prolific in children is never prolific in ideas, and the world never records him as wise. The three persons you have mentioned in your Je ter prove the position I take. I would J. Jrefore recommend Robert Garratt as the mo.
