In a dignified manly style he presented, some of the immediate causes of the rebellion, as the legitimate children of Slavery, to bb tlie arrant pride of Southern chivalry, and their false views of northern courage and manhood He gave us. the history and treachery of Johnson, true to the picture of his public life, and narrated some of the heart rendering scenes at the New Orleans Massacre as the natural result of his policy. He was listened to with marked attention and decorum. Hon. M.

Solon O. Thatcher came next in order and we have no hesitency in saying that it was tho speech of all speeches, ou that occasion for subject matter. In fact we have heard none so good in the State of Kansas. He went to the very foundation, and lifted up the corner stoae of the rebellion, cursed and black, Uuniaa Slavery, as the cause of the war. And he showed by irresistable logic that the battle eling through the southern tier of counties in this State would be surprized to see the hundreds of looms, hand card, and old Resolutions as a declaration of our sentiments.

The temperature of the steam was so high that egetable packing at once burned out, but after a series of trials it has been found that ordinary metallic packing can be used with perfect success. 2d.

The common slide valve, although it cat be used, was found defective, as it had to be lubricated with oil, and the heat was so great that the oil 'burned: This difficulty has been, overcome by the use of valves that work entirely surrounded by steam, so that no oil i3 needed. 3d. The ordinary engine pump was fo ind lly adapted to the wants of the generator, as the supply of water was not regular and it could not be perfectly controlled. regard to the best shape and size of geirrator, and the best materi als of which to construct it, so as to secure the greatest stnnjth durability and cautany. The experiments to decide these questions arc now going on, by machines in "use in New in Illinois, and in California. Several other generators are to be put immediately in use, and the cofcibined actimof all will fumi-di sufficient data for an intelligent decision in regard to these several points. It has already 'been ascertained by engineers that from twenly to thirty per cent of power is gained by the ue of of superheated steam and experiments during the past summer with the generator have established the iact, that a contiuuous pressure of from 200 to 250 lbs. of steam can be carried with perfect safety, thus practically more than doubling the werking pow er of engines.

In many other particulars and details the most satisfactory results have been obtained.
