He was out in the storm from Monday morning until Wednesday. A number of the citizens of Aetna have formed a prospective company and are putting down a hoto in search ef coal. The prospects are said to be encouraging. Our old friend, V. G.

Clarjc, on De cember 10, presented the Review senior with a fine, large, delicious watermelon. Where is another country editor that can boast of such a presenV.at this season of tha year, and where is there anothcrcuntry that cart produce them? Coldwater Review! The numerous coal discoveries which have been made in various parts of Comanche county within the past month would indicate that the coal field is extensive and, when worked, will yield an abundance of coal. The latest discovery is that made by Grant about ten miles north of this city, and consists of a large vein of what seems to be a good quality of coal. Mr. J.

R. Green brought from the territory a buffalo bone with an Ind Ian arrow spike driven through it. The spike is of steel, about two and one-half inches long and one-half inch wide. The arrow must have been projected with a terrific force, as it had to puss through eight or ten inches of muscle before it reached the bone. It can be seen at the Ledger office.

Protection Ledger. Nescatunga Enterprise: "To-day II. Clift sent to this office a couple of fine artichoke bulbs which he raised on his farm, one mile north of town. The artichoke will thrive with little or no cultivation and the bulbs are excellent to feed pigs. Many eastern farmers plant a small field and in the early fall when the bulbs have nearly all matur ed then turn their pigs Into the- field and let them do the harvesting.

The artichoke withstands drouth remark ably well and we believe it would pay our farmers to try raising a small patch of the. vegetable." Farming without stock-raising is neither legitimate nor profitable. Na ture Intended all that grows to be re turned to the soil in some form or other, This can not be done without a combi nation of cropping andlstock-raising. By such farming as enables the concentrat ed strength of the soil's vegetable growth to be. returned to It each season, the land is improved and the farm becomes better each succeeding year.

On the otner hand, such farming as the "Bo nanza farming" of the Northwest im poveriuhes the land and sends its strength and vitality in the heavily laden grain trains off to the markets of the world, Instead of returing at least a part to the soil. Such farming is not legitimate, and cannot be profitable for any length of time. Kansas Farmer The Kingman Democrat gives the following good advice, which Should be heeded by evry Comanche county far mer: "If there ever was a time when the owners of Kansas arhl land should rest their minds complacently aU to the future of the agricultural interests of the state, that time is now. during the past few weeks developments have been made that have a specific and Wonderful bearing upon the utitre of Kansas husbandry. In the late achieve' ments in the manufacture of sugar from sorghum an advantage iB gained to the Kansas farmer that is almost beyond computation.

Sugar works ill be established lti various parts of the state and a home market will thus be created for (a crop that never fails'. A farmer that cannot see an opportunity opened through the success of the experiments in this direction is indeed blind. Not only does it increase his opportunities, but in direct proportion it enhance the Value of his land. Lamed Eagle-OptlCl "Mr, Sampson, who owns a stock ranch on Ash-creek, ten miles north of this city, sometime ago dehorned all of his horned caUle1, the operation bt-hig performed In a most successful and satisfactory man ner. The llorns were taken oil jdit below the hide with a meat saw, over a hundred head being dehorned In less than a day.

The operation did not prove severe at all, the cuttle apparently suffering Very little, Jf any pain, and almost Immediately tifter Ihy were released they would goto eating sts though nothing had occurred. Mr. Sampson says the advantages secured bv taking the horns off his cattle liesin the fart that Without horns they take less shed room, will stand and eat closer are not as qtinnelsome, and the stronger cannot drive the weaker pnimaTs out of the sheds or away from the feed ns horned cattle" do. His entire herd is notf without horns, and is doing much better than ever before. In the future he will dehorn all of his cattle while they are calves." the entertainment in the Hall tomor row evening: Sontr, OurGlud Jubiloo By.tlo Audience Prayer W.

We understand that our respected neighbor, Mr. Tomlin, has been chosen by the "Aid Association" of Clark county to canvass the eastern part of the state for aid, for the poor of Clark county. Mr.

Tomlin is a Worthy cit izen, and no better man could have been selected. Mr. Charles Tomlin tried his new sleigh to-day. It was quite a fine turnout. Mr.

John Coleman has returned from Colorado and is making his home at Mr. Ferrell'i. IJe intends to. remain the balance of the winter. D.

w.ii. MORE SALT. Wichita EiikIo. Central Kansas bids fair to be able to supply the world, at. least the western world, with salt.

Wichita is putting down three different drill holes, ha'i in each instance struck inexhaustible uup-plies of salt water, of such specific gravity as to hear up an egg. In one instance the water came up to within a few feet of the surface and of such strength as would hold no more Bait in solution. Ellsworth, Hutchison and Kingman each have struck salt supplies. Down in Comanche count they have a surface deposit where they shovol it up by the cart loud. Now coms a special dispatch to tha Eagle from Lyons, with the announcement thHt in boring for gas up there a salt vein of finest quality" seventy-five feet in thickness has just been struck, with the drill still in salt.
