HAWKES. 34tf The young folks of this city were treated to a select dance last evening at the residence of J. B. Ervin. Among those present we noticed little Adam Shriver, master Harry Glenn, John Moffett and fifty others.

The doctor has a happy way of entertaining the little folks, and one and all express their deepest sympathy for him at his loss last evening. Lively ruction between Mrs. Gen. Harrison and Mrs. Vice- President Morton on the decollete question.

Whether the state gowns shall be cut low tariff or high tariff: whether shoulders and arms above the long gloves, shall be "protected" or not these are the questions, Mrs. Ben is said to have a beautiful neck, fine shoulderB and a gushing billowy bust, yet she, unlike Madame de Stare of the pretty arms, is averse to exposing her esthetic charms. Usually, womcx with skinny scrawny necke, bony shoulders and arms and fiat pancake busts are "champions of severe taste, while those who favor the decollete and sunny south exposures of tho haunts of the muses have a tropical development of personal landscape. But the dressmakers say tho First Lady is charmingly presentable, and Mrs. Morton in sists in a lady-like way of course.

that Mrs. Ben Hur shall make up in trail what she loses above, and shall not be stingy of her charms. Finally, they have compromised, the gowns are to be low-tariff above, bat the bare spots covered front and rear, with mossy laces that shall veil and obscure, but leave the imagination free to re vel in the suggestiveiiess of the situation. And this is what Indianapolis Presbyterianism and New York nave come to a tane.w jLTUiy we are a great people. Menke-Constant.

Hutchinson Daily that was saved so rapid was the house enveloped in flames. Tho doctor was sleeping in the bed room near where the fire started and was first awakened by a smothering sensation and did not get out in time to entirely escape the flames, his hair was singed and his face and neck slightly burnt.

The doctors wife is at Wolf City, Texas, visiting with their daughter, and at.this writing is entirely unaware of the disaster to her home. The strange part of the whole affair is that the kitchen stove was tho only one with a fire in, and as the night was very pleasant, and this fire was supposed to have been entirely extinguished when the doctor went, to bed. The kitchen flue is still standing and shows that it was, and is yet, in good condition and that the fire certainly could not have been caused by a defective flue, so often the cause of such disasters. Harper has been remarkably free from residence fires as this is the only one burnt in the past year. The hose and hook and ladder company were promptly on hand and did excellent work, and would have been able to have saved the building had an alarm been given sooner.

An Intolerable Nuisance. The literanes are got up to ac custom the young to perform in public, but if tho public was to take no pleasure iu the Hteraries, there would be little or no use to get them up at ail. Such however not the case with our people; ye like to go to see our children do their best on the platform, and it is just that should demand perfect silence in the Chapel Hall to enable us to listen to the words of the big and little ones, and to fully enjoy and appreciate the performances which have been worked up with so. much care- How patient we ail are; it is astonishing that we like the liter- aries so much, when we consider that everybody on Friday evening last was annoyed beyond all des cription by the continuous noise at the back. The behavior there was truly disgraceful; a vast quantity of boys belonging to the ignorant and nonsense-talking class hung on to the balustrades, and scraped the plaster from the wall; they talked and shouted pretty freely, but their insolence knew no bounds and they sometimes varied their rowdy ribaldry by a little fight among themselves which helped to raise the general clamor to a most intolerable extent.

Atone time we narrowly escaped a serious disturbance as a drunken man reeled into tho hallantl clutching an unoffensive boy by the throat, dragged him down the staircase several steps at a time. And there was as usual a vast quantity of boys who rushed up and down the stairs with absolutely no other inten tion but to deprive the public of their enjoyment. It is shameful that every one of our public meetings not excepting the church services should thus be spoilt, and measures should be made to prevent these abuses. We can not close the Chapel Hall doors for we have not any, but wo can surely adopt ome other measure to kesp the THE Harper, Kansas. Clmrbe.
