A WORD OP EXPLANATION This Souvenir edition of the old Spring Lake Hornet has been reissued by the original editor and pub-Usher, C. K. Sourbier, after forty years of Jewelry service to the children of the pioneers. The work has been done at odd times during the past several years and has been a source of pleasure and interest in reproducing a paper printed in the pioneer times of Meade County, it being the second in the county. The first issue was in May 1885 and the last in 1889 It was published twice a month if the weather was favorable, as it was so cold in the office sometimes the ink would not spread.

It was the enterprise of a crippled boy of fifteen and now, at sixty-five, I can look back on the experience as a small contribution to early Meade County History. The original printing outfit was assembled from many sources, the press was built by my father, Frank Sourbier, some of the type was donated by the Dodge City Times, the Fowler Graphic and others. This outfit was taken to Salt Lake City in 1890 sold and lost trace of. The type for the reprint edition was secured from old print shops to match the original faces. It being impossible to locate the style for the heading, the letters were engraved on type metal blanks by myself.

This edition is made up of items and ad-vertisments, running through several years of the old files. Nearly all the names mentioned have been scattered to the four winds or sleep in the cemeteries of Meade, Fowler or Plains, their pioneer work finished. A copy is sent to all of those on the old Hornet subscription list, if living, or to a member of the family if their address is known, with the compliments of, C. K. Sourbier, Meade, Kansas, 1933.
