MACDONALD'S HARDWARE STORE, North Side Sq'r. Meade HAIL TO THE CHIEF. The President's resistance to the" demands of congress upon him for more clerical service in signing bills at the close of the session will be approved by every man who, like the president, has a tountiful supply of common honesty and common sense. The best president of the United States doc'a not propose to yield duty to courtesy or convenience or to step out of the straight road to make way for anybody's jobbing arrangement.

The country bad hardly paused in its judgement of current political affair long enough to consider the prerogative of the presidential office implied in the presence of the president at the capitol on the last day of the session of congress for the purpose of attaching his signature to all the measures that might be presented to him on that occasion. The beat presidents succumbed to the pressure, but one has been found to resist it ard in doing so to receive the universal commendation of the people. Bodies of sensible; faithful public men ought to order the affairs committed to their management with reference to the rights and duties of all who are effected by or participate in them, and to that end anticipate the contingencies that attend every stage of their proceedings. In the last two weeks time has been wasted by both senate and house which should have been employed in perfecting the very measures which they hope to hurry through on the last day, and rush off for the president to sign without consideration. It is very much like Jacksonian democracy for the president to tell congress that he does not intend to be trifled with, even on the last day of the session.

The significance of the president's course is more than its merely practical effects on pending legislation. The country has been looking for politics based on sound, sensible, business principles, and for politicians who minimize the honor and exalt the obligations of official position. It has for a long time wanted a president who regarded himself as the public servent and not the public master, and the numerous indications in the first year of Cleveland's term point to exactly that kind of a man. The example cannot fail of a wholesome in BISHOP EAGLE LAND Surveyors and Draughtsmen Town and Farm property bought and gold. Short and long time loans on terms to suit borrower.

Also the world renowned JEWEL VAPOR STOVES- cate has to say regarding? the "Revenue" The Press-Democrt haia been work ing a grand scheme to get land office printing.

It is trying to pull enough wool oter the eyes of the central committee to make them announce that paper the official organ of the Demo-racy of the county. It seems that Mechler Uros are not aware that it is known that Geo. V. Mechler was one of the publishers of a black Repub lican paper in Danville, Ind. It is written to this country by his old partner that George is untrustworthy in other words, he would barter every principle of decerrcy, honor and party for a few dollars.

At the time the Telegram went to1 that town, the P. D. contained about $200 worth of land notices, but as soon as the other paper got one, the P. D. commenced a tirade on Register Niles, which cooked its goose for land office printing.

Mr. Niles did just the thing any man would do, and we hope he will continue to do as he has done. Democrats! shake the Press-Demo crat! It is announced that GenT Logan will deliver and oration in Winfield to-morrow. We think there is about as much truth in that announcement as in the announcement that Plumb and In galls will speak in Meade Cen ter to-morrow, or that the Press-Dem ocrat editor is a Democrat. The Telegram has at last conclu- ed to expose the Press-Democrat, and gives a column and a half for a starter.

It is well. Register Niles has been confirmed. It is now in order for the Press-Dem. ocrat to howl if the trip to Garden City fails to make the connection that has been tried. The "Reveaue" p-d believes in the old maxum: "If at first you don't succeed, try, try again AFRAID OF THE VETO.

Stories of the re cent cyclone in Ohio are coming in freely, but they do not approac the marvelous stories of the tornado that swept up the valley of the roar ing Codorus, in York county, in the cold spring of 1842- After the st nn we speak of one farmer found tha his well had been pulled up by tht roots, and was hanging on the limbs of a white oak tree four miles away A cellar belonging to one of his neighbors was split in two, one-half it being blown through a stone quarr and the other half turned up endwia against a haystack in the adjoinii ig county.

A flock of geese were coi npletely stripped of their feathers by the wind, and a dried apple ie was blown through the side of a school house, ten if ing the teacher and scholars, besides ruining a la rge map of the grasshopper district of Kansas. A large barn containing thirteen tons of hay was lifted off its foundation and carried bodily six miles down the valley, where it set tied down so squarely the doors coul not be opened without prying them. The wind blew the tails off six Durha.m cows, and a Berkshire weighi ng 200 pounds, was blown complete ly through his skin, the hide remain ing in a standing position and preserving an expression of naturalness that deceived many visitors. The boundary lines of several townships wero bent all out of shape, so tha they- looked like a curled hair matt ress on a hot griddle, and the air as bl own so completely out of the val ley i hat the people had to go up on ilae ills when they wanted' to breathel Advertit ed Letters. The liepublu ans of Meade county are begining to see which way the straws are pointing and we expect that before the election they will be making concessions to the Democratic party in court" that their name" is not li. CHAPTER NO. 3.

From the Hendricks County tfnion, Dobson Mechler, Proprietors. There are more law -defying, peace-destroying, treasury-robbing and Liod-dishonoring rascals in the Democratic government of St. I.ouis, Chicago and New York, ten times over, than has crept into all the departments of the General Government. Only this week the Governor of Missouri has been in the toils of the Grand Jury at St. Louis for alleged complicity with gamblers in a scheme which Up fc ffrts writing has been successful in turning the city goTernment over to the gamblers and thieves, and the Governor has ISeen obliged to hasten to St.

Louis to make what it is believed will be a vain attercpt to swear himself out. The New York Sun's platform for 'The den of thieves must lie cleaned out," is an excellent one for Republicans to get on right now, and then to 'push' things." Tne' above is the kind of "Democratic doctrine' the editor of the "revenue" Presa-Democrat preached some three years ago. We believe in such a thing as reformation, but a man that can have the cheek to allow his name to appear at the head of a newspaper with such declaration as the we say is not worthy of being recognized by the Democratic party only on probation, and then he wants to be guard-id by vigilant eyes. A man who will jump out of the pen of political corruption where he has been buried all his life and ask admitt ance into the ranks of the party whom he had fought so hard to defeat; a man who will resort to vilification as a means of defending his past political record, one who professes to be a Democrat, yet at the same time accuse his own party of fraud, by declaring that there was fraud in the Garden City land office, right at the time the first step the Democratic party has made for twenty years, when instead of trying to convict he should defend. "The foul scheme the editor of the p-d together with two other dissatisfied mugwumps tried to defeat Mr.

Niles confirmation, ought to be placed in the balance and given just what he honestly deserves. Mr. Mech-ler's Democratic record only dates back to the few months of his sojourn iu Meade Center, and we doubt not that if Blaine had been elected in stead of Cleveland, Mechler to-day would beoperatiug a Republican sheet which would be characteristic of his former workings. There saould be appointed at once in the counties of Comanche, Kiowa, Clark and Meade, a member of the Twenty-Fourth judicial district central committee, provided there are such committeemen in office. In Barber couuty, E.

P. Caruthers is the committeeman of the old Ninteenth district, but that there may be no question about the matter, he will ask the maiss'crnvention, in this city, on the 10th to appoint a member for the Twenty-Fourth district. When formed, this committee should meet' and agree on the time and place for bolding a convention to nominate a candidate for district judge. There will be an opportunity for a good democrat to be elected judge in this district if the proper effort is made. The counties of Barber and Comanche last year gave Judge Herrick, the democrat candidate for judge, 400 majority, and since then the immigration has been largely made up of democrats, lienides, we understand that Clark and Meade counties will show democratic majorties on a fair vote and an honest count.

Judge Ellis, present incumbent by appointment, is past redemption, in a political way, no matter how good a man he maybe personally. Suggestions from the Democratic papers of the district are novr in order. Barber County Index. The Telkoram has no' choice, just bo he is a strong man and staunch Democrat, and if Barber or any county can recommend a good man for judge, Meade county will fight it out on that line if it tate the hide with the hair. Nor is the example lost on the presidential succession. It is indeed but the extension of that whichas governor of New York, commmanded the candidacy of Mr.

Cleveland for president in 1884. The people had got a glimpse of the man they wanted, and they sent for him through the democratic Chicago convention. Having secured their choice and realized their expectations, they will not be slow to show their displeasure when the politicians of the old regimes propose their restoration. CANDIDATE FOE GOVERNOE. The time was in Kansas that candidates were nominated by the Democrats for the state officers for form only. In those days a Republican nomination meant an election; but that time is past. It now behoves the Democratic party of Kansas to make wise selections, especially so for governor, for it is not possible that the Democrats will this fall elect their candidate, but in the light of events the disaffected Republicans, the Democratic immigration, and the consequent great growth of the Democratic party, it is extremely probable that the nominee of the Democratic party of Kansas, for governor if he be a good man, will be elected to that office by a large majority. In this connection, therefore, we wish to mention- the name of Judge J.

Wade Winfield, as the proper man for the His name has already been mentiohed and his qualities as an honest, able man eminently capable of performing the duties of that office are well known throughout the state. He has had much experience in official positions of high character, is far above the grade of the average politician, a man above all factions, and is tbe man above all others whom we would like to see in that office. Though he lives in the strongest Republican county in the state, if nominated, he will be certain to carry the county. Put us down for Judge McDonald. Garden City Irrigator.
