SCOTT P. SCOTT CO. BANK OF MEADE CENTER The Leading "3y Successor; to Meade Deposit Bank. 2 FIRM 11 J. JAS.

O'MEARA, A. BLAIR, EWART, Of Meade County. ((())) A Desperate Deed. The following account of terrible tshooting affair occured near. Erigle-wood the forepart of last week; we clip from the Englewood GhiefV On Monday morning last the intelligence was conveyed to our midst of one of the most bloody affairs that has ever taken place in any part of this southwest country.

It seems, from the best information that we can get, that some cowboys were congregated in a small house belonging to a man named Boone, and while they were having a little time among themselves, some parties on the outside opeaed fire on the house, firing the side in which there were no windows situated, thus placing the parties on the inside at a disadvantage. At the first fire a man known hereabout as McCoy, but whose right name was Bill Bridgford, fell mortally wounded, the ball entering his right side lodging in his abdomen, causing almost instant death. He lived long enough, however, to give the residence of his folks and how to dispose of his effects. Dec Douglass, who is well known in this section, was CAPITAL $50,000. $25,000 PAID UP, THE BANK OF MEADE CENTER owned and controlled by the Representative men of western Kansas, which is ample security of its responsibility.

WILLIS. G. EMERSON, Manager. MEADE CENTER, KANS A. 8 shot through the right arm, the ball pasting through the armjuat above the elbow crushing the bone in a terrible maimer.

It has not been fully decided as to whether his arm will have to be amputated or not. lie is now ia our city and doing well. Charlie Rock-hold was shot through the thighs, and a glauce shot on the head leaving piece of the ball adhering to the skull. His woiinds are serious and may prove fatel. The man named Boone happened to be on the outside of the house opposite to the parties doing the shooting, looking after McCoy's horse.

The assaulting parties seeing him opened fira on him which he returned. Failing to get the horse bridled he rode oft" as ho was at full speed, but before going far ran into a wire fence cutting himself fearfully. Turning he started again, but before going far again collided with the ft nee, this time with such a force that the throat of the horse was cut killing it inptantly. Boone then walked to a sod house and stayed all night. Ie was not wounded by the shooting; his cuts from the wire fence are very bad.

The parties who did this wholesale shooting are yet unknown. This mode of warfare is condemned by all. Dr. Holmers of our city dressed the wounds of the injured. "William K.

Palmer and wife arrived in the city Sunday evening and took quarters at the Commerical. We are glad to see William once more among us, especially with a help mate to cheer him on his onward march to prosperity and happiness. As it is our desire to send the Telegram to each person that has a notice of final proof iu the paper, and as we are at a loss--, sometimes to know what post oil ice to send the paper to in order that the right parties may get it, we uju a nivor inai rai persons who are iial proofs of tlieir laud tO f-emJ tis eir post otTice atidress on jxist: aril or leave it at this oHicp, and if we get tlirlr notice uiil retrulnrly i i sen a li the paper to them free of chart Mr. G. Wam-oiier, Pierce cd the linn of oi Springfield the cotiuty seat of Seward county, in company ith Mr.J.

Van Vooihis, were in the city yeai'erday anu frave us a pleasant can. iotn gentlemen seem to have the enterprise that is recruiied to give life and push to a new town, and certainly Springfield should be proud of such men. The stage line running from Dodge City to Meade Center has changed hands, Mr. Cal Ferguson selling out to Mr. Iteynolds who controls the line from Dodge to Ashland.

Mr. Re3-riolds talk's charge the first of July, and we Lclieve with the present drivers, ami ir. it. Ij. silvers as agent win continue to give entire satisfaction in the future, as the line has in the past, to the citizens of Southwestern Kansas.

An exeliange very correctly remarks that to write for a paper is cue thing; to edit it another. There are some excellent writers who would "make a fool of a paper" if they had the editing of it a few weeks. A good editor seldoms writes much for his paper; he reads, judges, selects, dictates, alters, combines; aud to do this well has little time to compose. Those people who have the most to say about the way a newspaper should be conducted, are those who know the least of what they are talking about. One day last week an eight-year-old sou of Mr.

Snow, living on the Chikaskia, while playing on a drift in the river, had his foot seized by a 78 pound cat fish, who took the foot and limb almost to the knee in it capacious mouth. The thoroughly frightened boy cried lustily for help and was speedily relieved from his embarrassing position, and the beligerent fish secured with a pitch-fork. South Haven New Era. Money!
