Mr.

W. II. Spri-c is in a critical condi- tion, caused by something like Blight's of the kidneys, and should receive di-the sympathy of our people in a manner characteristic of his valuable qualities as one of our jcituens, It is to be hoped that he will soon Jje able to attend to his official duties. One of the most striking ordinances for our new Council to give an early consideration is one to prevent the running at large of stock of any kind inside the city limits. Tlle time has arrived for making garden, planting trees, and it is very essential that they should be protected from the many hogs jand cows now running loose in the city, during the summer season at least.

The Meade County Bank is a home institution, controlled entirely by residents of Meade Center. Ten thousand dollars of the authorized fifty thousand is paid up. It owns the banking house and real estate, and is a solid fixture. Prompt and careful attention ill be given the accounts of all. It offers its services to the entire public, with the as surance that every facility, compatible with the principles of sound banking will be extended.

Its rates of discount will be as low as is consistant with a safe and conservative business. It offers its services and solicits a liberal share of patrenage. 4-S One of the "mistakes of life" in Meade on the part ef our citizens who have bouses for rent, is that they are holding them entirely too high, considering he amount of money invested and the surrounding conveniences. They seem to draw the idea that people who want to rent a house are Vander-bilts or railroads syndicates, and can afford jto pay most any price for a little 14X16 room. There is a number of small houses in town that are for rent, but owing to the lucure required to rent them they remain vacant.

Consider, for a moment, the interest on the amount of money invested, and then price your house accordingly, and see if you don't get good interest, by asking much less per n.onth. If the demand was greater than the supply, it would be different but it seems, rom the amount of vacant houses, the rents are too high or the supply is greater than the the two. We certainly believe it is one of Shooting at Odee. Last Monday Odce.in the south part of the county, was treated to a little sensation by the shooting of one Stivers by Price Moody. We have been unable to learn the particulars in the case, as to what prompted the act, but understand that both parties played a full hand, and that several 6hots were fired by each, none of which took effect, except one from Moody's gun, which struck the arm of Stivers, passing through the fleshy part just above the elbow, and striking the side of his body.

The ball came in coutact with a rib and glanced downward, lodging in one of his boots. learn that the wound is not very serious, and hope that the difficulty will end where it is withont further trouble. WIT AND WISDOM. The fool who kills himself never -mistakes the wrong person. Few are qualified to shine in company, but it is in most men's power to be agreeable.

When vou have quit drinking and gone to sleep, thus giving your interior arrangements a chance to go about their ordinary duties, the oil will gradually evaporate itself through the system, allowing the fumes of the liquor to rise to your head. The consequence is that you awake in the morning It's the funniest thing in the world when a man has this experience for the first time. He can't understand it p.t all, neither can his wife, who has seen him go to bed sober the night befpre and can't be persuaded that he has not got up during the early hours to take on the load he apparently has with him. Butter has the same effect as sweet-oil because It contains a large percentage of that fluid in its composition, so I'd advise you to leave hot rum and butter severely alone if you're a married man.

F. M. NILES. 4-S Register. A K0F.SIBLE MONSTROSITY.

There passed through the city yes. terday a monstrosity which was a sad sight to look upon. It was a boy bv the name of UiUy Let singer, wbosi; parents were enroute from Missouri to the western part of Kansas, wberu 1 they expect to Jocatp a home. Ilio, httle fellow, although exceedim" bright and intelligent for till 1.1 Ml the aire of three vears, was horritly deformed. In the plare of the usually developed anus there was a li ijl like that of a iish, and the strangeness of the fact is that a fin was fully developed, and as natural as one of the animals of water.

The, legs were fully developed until 'hey reached the ankle' joint, when instead of feet they expanded into a paddle-shaped fiu, sometLing in the. shap.e of a beaver's tail. The only deformity about the head was the mouth, which resembled that of a. spoon fish, the lower jaw extending nearly an inch -and a halt' forward of the upper. His parents who seem ttf be of average intelligence, cannot ex-, plain the deformity, except that it.

arises from the fact that when crossing the ocean to come to this country about three years ago, and just before the child was born, Mrs. Let-singer became frightened by the aj-pearance one day of several huge shark, vzhich followed thi: vessel several miles. Mr. and Mrs. Let singer keenly feel the condition of their only child, and its much as possible keep him from tbe eyes of the public, Common wealth.

f'Let me have a little butter, please," said a stout, elderly gentleman, who stood in front of the Morton house bar the other evening, with a glass of steaming hot rum before him. The white-aproned bar-tender bent down, and from a shelf underneath the polished mahogany brought up a dish of butter, in which was stuck a silver knife. With this the man took off a lump of butter and dropped into his glass and stirred it about until it was melted. Then he drank the con-coction slowly, with an oily smile overspreading his features. "Yes, it is rather a curious drink." said the bar-tender to the reporter standing by, ''but it is a very pleas-ant one, and a great favorite with some gentlemen.

Those who don't know of its effects, however, had better leave it alone, for the effects are apt to be queer. The man who drinks a number of these hot rums would be quite sober when he went home, but in the morning when he woke up he would be as drunk as a lord. That's odd, isn't it? But it is easy enough to explain. It is because there so much oil in the butter. "Let me explain, and you can try it yourself.

Take a bottle of sweet-oil with you when you go out with the boys the next time. Order any kind of liquor you like, though I wouldn't bother much with, beer if I were jou. drops of Pour into the glass a few sweet-oil every time you take a driDk. No matter how much you drink you vvill keep sober, while your friends, if they keep up with you, will be in a very 'how-came-you-so' condition. You go home and go to bed feeling all right, and in the morning when you wake up you will be dead drunk.

The reason is simple. Oil, as you know, rises to the surface. "Consequently, when you drink tb.2se the oil rewauis on the surface in jour stomach, keeping the fumes of the liquor down. That prevents you.
