He has not only made countless experiments, but has written about them in about 600 arti cles and brochures, besides nearly twenty big scientific volumes. At the same time he has delivered lectures regularly, -written on historic, political and philosophical subjects and trans lated books from several languages, including Latin, Greek and Arabic. No one has studied the old alchemists so thoroughly as he has. In politics he is a radical of radicals. He -was one of Renaa's most intimate friends.

For twenty years he was a senator of France, twice minister of public Instruction and fine arts, and once min ister of the interior. He may be call ed the head of French science. With all his diverse activities he has time to devote to his home duties as pater familias. Don't Use Slang. "A lady used the expression 'Gee' the other night," says an exchange.

It had never occurred to her that this was taking the name of the Lord in vain, and probably few of many -who indulge in sugar-coated profanity re alize that they are swearing. What is "Gee" though, but a euphemism for "Jesus?" "Dear me" is nothing but the Latin "Deo (My God), "For Goodness Sake" is only for "God's Sake." "Drat it" is "God rot it." "Judas Priest" is "Jesus Christ." "Golly," "Gosh," "Glory," are only va riations of "Damn it." In short, there Is probably not an expression of this sort that cannot be tracked to an oath for its origin. THE RELIABLE SHOE SHOP. C. II.

II. C. Warner, Arlington, Ivans. Dear Sir: 4 -It costs as much to put on poor paint as good" a common saying and true it costs much more to put-on poor paint; more gallons. Poor paint is paint and barytes or paint and sand or paint and lime or paint and chalk or paint and benzine or paint and water; these are the usual cheats', there are others.

It takes more gallons of paint-and-a-cheat than of honest paint; and the cost of labor of painting is so much a gallon-one gallon costs as much as another, for labor. This is the way to reckon your costs for this year; but how about next year? Paint Devoe, and next year costs nothing; year after next the same; the same for several years. Paint anything else, and your costs recur according to what you paint-with. Some of the mixtures wear one year; some two; some three. I costs twice, three times, four times, as much to paint A a cheat as to paint with Devoe.

Yours truly, F. W. Devoe Co. New York, Chicago and Kansas City 1. S.
