Last Saturday was a day long to be remembered by our teachers. Superintendent Winans was elected by the largest majority of any state officer in the United States. Several of our teachers attended the teachers meeting held in Springfield last Saturday night. I failed to attend some of the educational meetings in the districts on account of sickness. A strong expression was given in favor of each teacher taking the Western School Journal.

A resolution was carried requesting Superintendent Winans to see that mental arithmetic was given a special position in the Normal course of study for the coming year. The Southwest Kansas Teachers Association will be held in Syracuse on the 17th of April. At the citizens district educational meeting at Pleasant Valley on the 18th inst. John II. Ellis was elected chairman and S. Samples secretary.

In this meeting a number of educational subjects were discussed. The meeting recommended the advisability of teachers attending county Normals and Teachers Association. They are in favor of paying good wages to good teachers; they favor levying a tax of 20 mills for the support of public schools, and of Xow that the vast herds of cattle are being forced from the Cherokee Strip and the farmers in the Neutral Strip south of us have voted in favor of a herd law, it is, we think, a very poor time for the residents of Meade county to ask for the repeal ot a law that keeps these immense herds from sweeping over our fields of unprotected growing grain. The trouble seems to arise from the fact that having had poor crops for a few years, compared with what have grown in older portions of the state, all are looking for a remedy and light upon the first thing which comes to mind. We do not say that those who want a repeal of the law are not most of them honest in their advocacy, though we heard of one man who said free range would enable him to get rich on mavericks.

ne suggests that inviting herds into the county would add property to help pay taxes, not thinking that assessment is made on valuation March 1st and would not reach them, as they would be gone before they could again be reached. There is one proposition on which we all agree, that Southwest Kansas is. for various reasous, par excellence a stock country. Not on account of the large Sheriff's Sale. the 12th day of April, 1890, between the for stock can be grown unlimited, and the wiuters are so extremly short, and the climate seems specially adapted to keep them in health. Another thing all agree on, that with our distance from market it will not pay our farmers to raise grain to sell, it must be fed to stock if money is to be made from it. But tnis is also the experience of countries much older than this. The friends of free range seem to act upon the supposition that a man must have four or five sections of land to run a herd upon. If they are to rely on buffalo grass for feed this would be true, but one quarter section put in milo maize or other cultivated fodder plants will furnish more feed than four sections of buffalo grass.

Then the problem falls upon this basis, do we want more people to raise more stock or shall we go back to the time when herds run without let or hindrance over the whole country? It would be folly to expect both conditions to exist at the same time, for fences can not be erected that will keep vast herds fiom destroying the crops of those who preferred to feed. A night herd law would only be a compromise between the two. It is bused upon the supposition that he who raises crops can guard them in the day time; but it does not recognize the fact that it would require a half dozen men to guard a crop that one could plant and tend. Of course it would be better thau no protection, though poor at best. As it is the small stock raiser, he who is the positive resident, he who stays in the county and is interested in its de What pleasant weather.

The farmers are busy sowing oats and attending to other spring work. May their labors be rewarded with a bountiful harvest. Clint Mahan is down with la grippe. Mrs. Post and Miss White, of Gray county, were visiting their sister, Mrs.

P. L. Craig last Saturday and Sunday. Little Elba Latta is still quite sick with fever. Dr.

Armstrong, of Fowler, is in attendance. Miss Mabel White attended the Association Saturday. Dame Rumor hath it that one of our old bachelors is to be married soon.
