Legal papers written accurately and with dispatch. KAS. MEADB CENTER, Opera House Block, MEADE CENTER, KAS. Extending Trade. Mr.

Harrison foigets the high protectionist lesson long enough to remark in his last public address that we should extend our trade to the South American republics. How are we going to do a large business with the sister republics when we have no ocean going steamships and will not buy their products? How are we going to develop trade when our rolicy is to place every conceivable restraint upon trade. There is more wealth in international trade than our latter day economists of the Kelley and McKinley school see. In the old days the Yankee skipper used to start from a home port with a cargo of notions or other salable products, trade it in China for silk and tea, trade that cargo for another at another port, and so on, coming home again at last with a cargo salable here and perhaps with a snug number of thousand in his pockets. Our shipping merchants were as enterprising and as successful as any in the world.

Wherever our commerce went it made monev not only for the ship owners, but for the formers, laborers and producers generally. Here we are in 1888 with the best labor-saving machinery in the world, the best inland transportation, the most intelligent, industrious and effective labor and the most fertile lands, yet we do all we can to cut off Land Office at Garden City, Kansas, Jnnel 18 's8 Notice is hereby given that the following-named settler lias filed notice of bis intention to make final proof in support ot his claim, and that said proof will be made be. fore the probate judge of Meade co Kans at Meade Center. 3-8 Nil.es, Register. consume two thirds of what our factories can produce. Instead of making millions by selling the over-product, we shut down the factories, let labor remain idle and keep prices as high as possible while tbe market catches up. When a country with our unequaled advantages of production and situation can not do business with even Mexico, di rectly on our border, something is evidently wroi g- A commission was sent a few years ago to travel through South America and report on the best way to establish trade between the different countries there and the United States. The commission made its journey and filed a report.

Trade goes on as it did before, England and Germany controlling the bulk of exchange in ports nearer to our coast line than the distance between Charleston and New York. We are pouring wealth into London and Liverpool by withdrawing from trade competition. The English trading classes are pleased with our policy. They have more fear of us than of all the other nations cambined. Like a stupid animal that does not know its strength we stay in a pen trembling for fear something will break in, while the world is afraid we will break out and dominate its trade.

Mr. Harrison is running on a platform which forbids trade, because it says that we should surrender taxes on whisky and tobacco sooner than tbe least item of our protective system. What does he wish to do for the furtherance of trade? No doubt he means that we should send another junketing commission to South America. If we send one the president of Chili will tell the excursionists as he told the last party, that Chili would be happy to trade with the United States when the United States wlil trade with Chili. Although that remark contained the whole science of commerce, the commission did not grasp it, and the next one appointed by Mr.

Harrison, would report and be discharged without showing us how to sell a dollar's worth in South America. Mr. Harrison will never have a chance to appoint a United States commission, a circumstance which is good for our reputation abroad. K. C.

Judge John Martin was tbe unanimous choice of the democracy of Kansas for governor, but there were over three hundred delegates in the republican convention against Humphrey on the first ballot. This fact alone shows that Martin's chances for election in November are good if not the best. Likewise Grover Cleveland was the unanimous choice of the democracy for president, while it took a whole week for the republicans to agree upon a candidate. W. F.

3 8 Niles Register. A. J. Stbeeteb, candidate of the union labor party for president, addressed the people of Leavenworth recently. He made a favorable impression upon his hearers.

He referred to the uniform condition of things existing among the farmers of Kansas, more than two-thirds of the farms of Kansas being mortgaged. This, he claimed, was due to the policy of protection and the laws of the republican party which had been made in the interest of the few and against the many. The Mills bill, he claimed was not one to commend itself because it did not go far enough, but it was better than was attempted by the republicans who were homo-pathics on the tariff.
