Hence the theory of incendiarism is a plausible one. In the confused state of affairs at this writing, it is impossible to approximate the extent of the loss. There was a considerable amount of freight iu the depot, some billed for points east, and some that was awaiting delivery for Springfield, this and other points. Mr. Dupree loses between two and three hundred dollars iii household goods and clothing, which he had stored in the depot.

The contents of the safe were found in good preservation, and included about $75, in cish. and $500 worth of bonds for Seward county. This would indicate that robbery was not the object, if the building was set on fire. Some loose silver change that was left in a drawer was also found in the ashes. To the superhuman efforts of Mr.

John Donellv, assisted by Messrs. Graves, Bee-sou, Seward, W. E. Hopkins, and perhaps others, the company is indebted for the preservation of the tracks, and the consequent non-interruption of the regular passage of trains; and also several freight cars that stood adjacent to the depot, one of which was loaded with coal for Turner Piymell, and th other was being loaded with wheat by E. M.

Mears. The loss is a serious one to the company, as all of their records pertaining to this depot were destroyed.
