Yesterday, about in o'clock, the citizens were again -tarried by the cry of Fire and under the impulse of the excitement a Ciiiaf reporter found himself in the rear of an excited crowd, and following at a slow jog-trot found himcelf in the outskirts of the city. The fiit object that met hi? view was a group gathered about a Babcock extinguisher striving in vain, (as usual), tq get the "blarsted thing'' to operate, and who at length were compelled to abandon it. It seems a Mr. O'Leary, while driving by the parish school house observed smoke issuing from the roof near the chimney, and bursting through the door, informed the inmates of the fact. A few buckets of water, well directed, had the effect of extinguishing the fire without any serious loss or damage.

KENNEDY. The Pottawatomie Chief, published at St Mary's, Kansas, ha3 changed hands, Mr. Clardy having disposed of the concern te the Messrs Merritt Bros. The new publishers are both young gentlemen just starting out in business life, full of energy, industry and hope. The Chief is now the only paper pnblished at St.

Mary's. The town has become a thriving, bustling little city, fully able to support a newspaper with profit both to itself and publishers. We trust its people will extend to these young gentlemen a patronage that will enable them to make a paper that will be a credit to all concerned. St. Mary's is a Democratic city and we hope its people and business men will realize the necesity, if they expect to hold political supremacy there, or to obtain it elsewhere, of supporting liberally and generously a paper that will uphold and fight for their senttiments.
