rates mads kiown on application. -Hs conveyed tb- Mammoth Stock, of Dry Good Beiongingid HlRAIVl RAFF to" HEGrWER BLOCK the experiments of reliable men in our own county, testify to its intrinsic worth we begin to feel that the matter demands the attention cf the farmers of Reno county. Alfalfa seems to be at home in a warm, firy climate, where the ground seldom, freezes, and frosts -rarely occur. It should be sown as early in the spring as the ground will permit, and just before a rainfall. A mellow, easily penetrated soil, suits it best, and should be thoroughly plowed and pulverized, and sown to about 15 lbs.

of Alfalfa to the acre covered not too deep, and brushed or rolled in. It has twice the productiveness of any other grass, and will feed 20 sheep to the acre, and keep them in good condition the entire season. It does not fail in productiveness in less than five years, wfaea it may be restored to its original vitality by plowing and pulverizing the surface, and the old root3 will send forth new ehoots; It may be mown a.3 cften as six times a year and pastured in the winter.1 It may be sown with barley or wheat, and when this is removed it will have attained the height -of two or three feet. We believe Alfalfa is peculiarly adapted to this climate. Wm.

Astle has Alfalfa sown the 15th of May, lS7.o, that made a growth ot three inches by the 1st of August. The second growth was eight inches high, at this time (Feb, 21st), it is sprouted out in leaf. Many other parties in the county have sown it successfully, and a fine specimen may be seen at the farm of Mr, J. Lockert, three miles southeast of town, also at the R. R.

experimental garden. Mr, E. L. Meyer has some fine specimens grown last year, and those who call to subscribe for the Independent, can see samples at this office. One door north Giilt GIVE HIjVI O-ELL.

Oa Wednesday last there was quite a lively time for about five miuutes, on Main in front of the Independent office. The team of Mr. Bridges broke loose and skipped thrnugh the streets at the rate of about 70 miles an hour, until they were stopped in their mad career by the sooner sign on Cow Creek bridge, which the fore wheels of the wagon enti.ely demolished, one of the rses standing on its ear for the jpace Oi' two seconds, immediately upon the striking of the saidsinby the raid From the 1. O. to the bridge the street was impasssable by the scattered debris of wagon, harness, and horse 11.

sh, while the bridge was a complete wreck. The horses were caught before reaching the court house, here the commissioners were in session, which was a very fortunate circumstance, for, had they passed, they mi' ht bv this time have been iu the ml Indian Territory. Immense crowds of excited citizens congregated in and around the bridge, and dray aud express wagons were running from all parts of the city, closely packed with human freight. For-tunatly no one was injured, not even the horses, who escaped with a few slight bruises. Meeting of the City Council.
